  • I'd say everyone has emotional baggage. I don't see a single person growing up on this planet that can possibly not have emotional baggage.

    The difference is about how you handle it. Emotional baggage and emotional instability are NOT connected.

    I don't think there is a particularly higher amount of people in tech that become insane at the first feel of power. They just often have a higher impact. Just look at the corporate world. The amount of power tripping managers is pretty high as well.

  • I wasn't aware that there was such an advanced compatibility layer! This is good news!

    Then Solarpunk is a bad example :) And the compatibility coverage is higher than I thought. But, since it isn't close to complete, especially as you said when it comes to esports titles, which are extremely popular, it's still the honest route to mention that when recommending Linux gaming.

    It might be enough to make me finally do the switch on my gaming PC, though.

  • The first category is still definitely under-covered by linux compatibility. If I look at the game I am currently playing, recently released, Solarpunk, I can't run it on Linux. I didn't have to look very far.

    So, no, it is not only e-sports titles. It's going in the right direction, but it's still not enough for Linux to be a good recommendation for gaming over Windows.

    If people want to switch to Linux for gaming, that's fantastic. But the incessant "Don't go for Windows, go for Linux" push without mentioning that you won't be able to play all the same titles does piss me off.

  • I'm not talking about performance, I'm talking about compatibility. Still too many games simply need Windows. Until this is no longer an issue, linux is not a viable alternative to recommend to gamers, or at least not without mentioning that a good chunk of AAA games will not be playable.

    But just like any community, Lemmy users are strongly opinionated, so I was expecting the irrational downvotes :)

  • Even if it was that simple, this is still a vulnerability that is basically a time bomb. The day that code would have been triggered would have been disastrous.

    But this isn't new, bug bounties tend to have terms as strict as they can to deny you the bounty while they obviously end up fixing issues that don't qualify for the bounty. All because of reason X or Y that turns out to be a subjective interpretation of a vague enough eligibility requirement.

  • Ah! I have one of those too. It's being retired soon, though, and banks using it are now do the switch to MasterCard for newly issued cards.

    (Maestro is a MasterCard brand)

    Edit: Nevermind, not every country is retiring Maestro as of today.

  • I don't know where you're from, but typically within the EU, especially in countries like Germany, Google and other mega corporations from the US don't have that much sway (yet) within the justice system. I wouldn't be surprised if this is validated in the near future by more impactful courts.

  • Definitely, but they also won't miss the opportunity to become a major actor in the industry globally. Contrary to the US, they have in the past decade made a lot of moves to establish their influence globally.

    This is something people complaining should remember. AI is good at some parts of the work of a software engineer: the grunt work.

    Gamers are just biased because of how appealing Steam is with its sales and vast catalog.

  • Not really. the second half of the 20th century was great to live in for the entire western world, and the beggining of the 21st, even with 2008, was not as hard economically as the past few years. Trump's policies have made a hard time following the pandemic into a worst time, as he destroys the little social helps the US has, and puts in place horrible policies that end up funneling money into his and big US companies' pockets.

    Makes perfect sense that this is the hardest time to live in the US for most people alive.
