  • Wow, are you me? Haha also circuit stuff, woodworking when I was a kid, piano I never play, just got my first sewing machine a few months ago.

Add in fpv drones, ham radio, meshtastic, homelab, enthusiast grade flashlights, longboarding, snowboarding, wake surfing, backpacking, flipperzero, LINUX! Lol you can run out of time and money pretty quickly.

But, do all these things just a little, and it's good.

Do you really never ever touch your stuff anymore? Or just nowhere near as much as you did?

Because for me, I still sometimes, rarely, but sometimes, utilize the skills I gained. I don't go hard on any single one of those things anymore, but I'm glad that I did, or at least I tell myself I am. Now when I go backpacking, I know I have the best flashlight for the job. When I play with meshtastic, my ham radio skills tell me my antenna placement is optimal. When we were sending a care package to a sick friend, we thought of a funny inside joke to reference, so I dusted off the 3D printer and printed up a couple trinkets that were perfectly matched to the joke. When I decided to set up my homelab, my previous love of Linux made it easier to set up proxmox. When I wanted to use my camp chair at the beach, I was able to sew a sheet to stretch between the feet to support me on the sand.

It's up to you what you wanna do. But I don't view my hobby jumping as a bad thing. So long as I keep the spending more or less in check, who cares? I'm having fun, learning skills, and those skills can come in handy.

Other people are sometimes jealous of my ability to learn and enjoy so many things. I'm able to help them when they get started later, because I have an approximate knowledge of many things 😂

I say go for it 😁

  • Ours is going up $100/mo next year

  • Lots of comments here, plenty of information for you. I'll add to the pile that I started playing with my buddies stock ender 3, fought it often, lots of tweaking and configuring.

Then I got my own ender 3v2, and fought it less, but still needs tinkering. Usually though I can fire it up and print small stuff without touching it. I print infrequently these days, so the procedure usually involves wiping the dust off the bed first. But it works well enough for my needs.

I tend to get into hobbies for awhile and then back off, so I'm glad I didn't spend more. And really, while $300 is a lot of money in many ways, in some ways it's not so much. I'm glad I have a printer, it is occasionally highly useful. But I'm glad I don't have a $600-1000 printer. Personally 🤷‍♂️ but that's just me.

  • Ever look into atomic/immutable distros? It's a whole different way of doing things, but so far... I really dig it.

I have a tendency to muck about in the settings and configs, and make my system... Unstable...

But with an atomic distro, running flatpacks for most things and containers for anything exotic, my fingers stay out of the pie, and my system has been rock solid for 3/4 of a year, which is impressive for me.

I don't think I'll go back, not for my main machine anyway.

  • It's comments like these that make me realize that maybe I have ADHD.. and then I stick my head on the sand and ignore it again..

  • So uh, what's the use case for this thing? Why do I-.. er.. why would someone want one?

    Asking for a friend...

  • I grew up yelling out "HEERRRRE KITTYKITTYKITTYKITYY!"

  • I just changed from glass to PEI, night and day difference

  • If I may ask, what conditions?

I'm currently trying to figure out why alcohol triggers migraines for me, but only sometimes. Lately it's been most times. I only drink socially now, and even then, more often than not I abstain.

I'm not talking big drinking, I mean one Manhattan can either be the beginning of a fun night where I might have two or three more drinks, tops. Or I can feel the headache starting before I even finish the first drink.

Replace whiskey with gin, vodka, beer, wine, whatever. All have the same 50/50 chance of ruining my night and next day, depending on how hard I ignore it. No rhyme or reason to what alcohol does it, though I admit to not being extremely scientific.

Sugar level doesn't seem to have an effect. Hyper hydration seemingly helps sometimes? But barely. Even with liquid IV or lmnt pregame, no dice. I drink plenty of water every day regardless, I like sugary foods but I avoid pop like the plague.

My recent blood work was all good, fasting glucose was good, so I don't think it's diabetes.

Doctor wasn't extremely helpful. He did recommend trying tiny amounts of alcohol, and different types of alcohol. Trying to see if some combination can bring relief. Then just drink that.

My most recent thought was that maybe it has some connection to my teeth. I get migraines for seemingly no reason, but a bad toothache can definitely be a trigger. I've got a couple bad teeth, and I grind. But dentistry is expensive, so it'll be awhile, if ever, before I find permanent relief there.

  • Well... Start INstalling it 😁

  • Right? Don't go hog wild. Live slightly above your current means. Don't hoard, just... Cruise, be chill. Nobody needs millions. Nobody needs hundreds of thousands. You just need enough to do the simple things you enjoy without being excessive.

  • I'd say 1 or 2 times a week. Sometimes a lot more, sometimes a little less.

That said.. My closest friends, the ones that I share the most common interests and hobbies with.. I barely see at all. I try to coordinate to see them monthly, but sometimes it's less. One has kids, the other has health problems.

The friends I hang out with the most, we have less in common, but we all get along well, and have some core interests and hobbies in common that I don't actually have in common with my closest friends.

The two groups of friends are cordial with each other, but neither of them are as close with each other as I am with them separately. It's interesting. I guess I have a diverse set of hobbies and friends.

I have other friends mixed in there too that I only see sporadically, that don't belong to either group. I struggle to make time for them every few months, usually at least a couple times a year, even though we live close by.

I'm glad I have friends, and it's good to be active and social. But I'm also a bit of an introvert, so some weeks I really just wanna stay home alone and veg. Many nights I do. But most times, if I get an invite to go do something/hang out, I take it. I'm really bad at planning things or inviting people over though, ironically. So I feel like I've lost friends over the years from not reaching out enough.

  • I do love me some Stargate. And Destiny is SUCH A COOL SHIP, I'm still mad about it..

  • No worries thanks for the information!

  • That's good to know thanks!

  • Good to know, I'll have to play with it.

  • Ah that makes sense haha

  • Hmmm, that doesn't sound very encouraging haha. Well I'm gonna try PEI anyway, see if I can keep it flat enough.

  • That's encouraging!
