  • Yeah. Or just personalized feeds that you could share. I'm sure some instances have a great list of communities that their subscribers follow, that isn't available on/Local. And going to /All isn't always a good time. If there was like a /All, but maybe with some extra filters, that users could just subscribe to, that would be awesome

  • Yeah that's probably true. Just looking at the polls though, I realized this was a possibility.

    Polls could also be wrong, which of course changes the statistics. But from what I've read, it seems like those states are each basically a coin flip, and the odds say a tie is not unlikely enough to ignore

  • I mean, it is a possibility. The current swing states (28 Oct) are AZ, GA, NV, NC, PA, WI, and MI, based on NYTimes polls. If Kamala only wins WI, NV, (NC or GA), and AZ, then both candidates end up with 268 electoral votes, and congress chooses the president.

    Another option is kamala wins AZ, NC, and GA.

    Doing some quick math, that's a 2.4% chance of happening

    The article wasn't talking about file systems like FAT32 or NTFS. It was talking about using directories, instead of "pulling files from a laundry basket" by using a search bar.

  • I mean the imperial system has it's niche uses too. Fractional measurements are helpful if you're doing multiple of something and you don't want to calculate. What if you have 16 boards and you need to lay them out across 19 feet, what's the width for each board and gap? Well its 19/16 or 1-3/16. And you could say your tolerance is ±1/16. Versus a decimal system, you need to hit 1.1875, with a ±0.0625 tolerance. Yeah no, imperial is better in that case.

    Bur imperial does have it's pains, especially once you start working with anything that isn't a multiple of 2. Just wanted to point out it does have some uses.

  • Frankly, who cares? If you don't want to see or participate in tankie propoganda, then don't. People point out that lemmy.ml is the hub for a lot of communities, so it isn't reasonable to switch to another instance. And then they bring up communities like !Linux@lemmy.ml Guess what, Linux isn't meant to be a hub for political discourse, and for the most part, it isn't. Use lemmy.ml how you want to use it, and if you want to participate in other political leanings, go to a different instance. No one is really stopping you, and that's the whole idea of the fediverse. And there really isn't any value lost, because this isn't a "choose one and only one" situation. You've got all of the fediverse at your fingertips

    So this came off a bit abrasive. But the point I want to convey is that if you want to have deep/heated political discourse, either do that on a community (and instance) suitable for it, or use an account specifically for political discussion. I think it helps everyone. The mods can referee communities with more clear boundaries, the lurkers/users don't need to worry about political debates when looking up tech support or whatever, and you (the reader/political dissident) can still enjoy your discussions with less worry about being randomly banned.

    A good ad is almost imperceptible in presenting an idea to you. I have no doubt that people that are bombarded with ads that they say they "ignore" are still influenced over not having seen the ad at all

  • Can I just add a different perspective on this?

    My dad is really old (like early baby-boomers), and I am basically the in-family tech support when the home computer starts acting strange.

    Well, right after google rolled out this update, my dad clicked on what he thought was an online shopping link. It was actually an ad for a toolbar add-on. Queue Cue like 6+ hours trying to uninstall that add-on and the bundled software.

    I never had to worry about that in the past with him because I had u-block origin installed. Now I need to find something else that can run quietly in the background. And probably a better antivirus.

  • I know these people closely. I don't think they expect him to go full on dictator. Maybe thats true for some other Trumpists, majority not true for the ones I know.

    Talking points you brought up seem to be a strawman. For Christians, a big reason they vote for Trump is because the Republican party has taken a hard stance on not allowing abortion. For many, many Christians, that is as serious a topic, as facism is on left-wing discussion forums.

    And again, their voting ideology is not so clear cut. They don't support Trump because they believe he is perfect in every category, rather, he checks the one box (or rather, his party) that is extremely controversial and important to them.

    Also yeah, right-wing extremists are more common then left-wing. So there is a concern there. I stand by what I said though, that the majority of Trump voters do not support extremist action.

  • From my conversations with Trump supporters, they typically acknowledge Trump is a bad choice and don't like the way he acts, talks, etc. They typically view what Trump says as an exaggeration, saying things like "he won't actually xyz".

    Universally, people I know that support Trump in real life, support him either because they are Christian, and feel that the Democratic party is against their core values. Or, they feel some kind of hatred against leftists, because of propoganda they have been fed.

    That's the way I see reality. There are extremists on both sides, but I refuse to stop believing that Trumpists aren't voting with what they believe is best for America, even if I personally disagree with them.

    I really dislike these discussions that paint the other side of a political battle as something insane like Nazi's, that just isn't real, and it makes me so sad to see people either believing it, or feeding the cycle by adding to the joke.

    I think I'm going to stop interacting with political feeds until after the election. It seems obvious that party politics are in full swing, and everyone is trying to demonize the other by making strawman arguments. Please, just vote logically and for the rights and justifications that are at stake, not because you think your fellow americans that disagree with you are anti-semitic.

  • I'm so glad I have a Reddit alternative now like Lemmy. Every news article I see about some corporate move Reddit makes, it seems further and further removed from the community-driven website I had hoped it would be.
