I'm a systems librarian in an academic library. I moved over the Lemmy after Rexxit 2023. I've had an account on sdf.org since 2009 (under a different username), and so I chose this instance out of a sense of nostalgia. I do all sorts of fiber arts (knitting, cross stitch, sewing) and love dogs.

  • Same boat, after I got a series of very loud "flash flood" alerts going late into the night. Every time the timeframe was extended there was another alert. I did not fancy being woken up at 2 am in my second floor bedroom to a alert telling me to stay off the roads.

  • Time Cube (now archived). I feel bit bad saying it, but omg the layout. It was bad even by 90s standards.

Edit: the creator died in 2015.

Edit2: CW, anti-queer rhetoric, but I find it very hard to take it seriously in the midst of waves hands vaguely at the rest of the website

  • Am librarian and can confirm: we all do this. It mostly comes up when shelving or retrieving books.

  • Sometime in 2010. My partner and I got our first pup, work was fine, apartment complex was good. Things were walkable. Pup loved snowpocalypse 2010, we went to the tennis courts and just ran around in the snow.

Obama was promising awesome healthcare reform. I had hope.

My mom hadn't told me that we were probably the sort of family who should only see each other at funerals. My mom hadn't yet killed my dad with COVID (she claims she got it at a "mandatory unmasked Christmas work potluck" in December 2020. She retired 2 months later, so it can't have been that mandatory. She knew he was immunocompetent and also didn't take him to the hospital as soon as his oxygen dipped below 90%.)

  • Budget lint

  • I feed and drug the dog, which reminds me to take my antidepressants and another pill which I have to take with food, and so I eat breakfast. I meme with my friends online. I compartmentalize the fuck out of life. I go to therapy. I give myself treats. I wrap the dog's pills in a hip-and-joint soft treat so he'll take them without me shoving them down his throat. I remind myself that I almost-own a condo, so I'm doing better that a lot of millennials.

  • You don't even have to go outside of English for examples. See: the pen/pin distinction in English: some speakers have it, some can hear it when I speak, and some can't.

  • Spicy rocks make water hot.

  • In theory my insurance covers my weekly out-of-network therapist. In practice, I pay the therapist, submit my bill to insurance for reimbursement, and it disappears into the ether. They claim they'll pay me back within 60 days (sometimes 60 business days, sometimes calendar days).

I've gotten a couple reimbursements in the last year, but I'm currently waiting on at least 5 months of payments. That's maybe $2000 and I'm lucky I can float that through savings.

And this is all supposed to go towards my annual maximum out-of-pocket expenses but the online system doesn't show that, but the papers I'm mailed do.

Oh, and in theory I could go to an in-network therapist but in practice they either don't exist or aren't a good fit.

Edit: and this is with what's theoretically really good insurance, thanks to my union. I spent 5 months not knowing if they'd arbitrarily deny my therapy.

  • My (unmarried) partner and I went to a lawyer together. The lawyer walked us through everything. We're basically leaving things to each other, with backups in case that's not an option. We have a special clause for who gets the dog if neither of us can--pup and some cash goes to a good friend, and we checked with friend ahead of time.

Lawyer asked us for any relatives we'd like to specifically exclude from inheritance, and she wasn't judgey at the length of our lists.

We're also each other's health care powers of attorney and decision-makers.

I recommend doing this at a lawyer if you can, it makes things much less stressful.

  • There was even a pig that got convicted in, like, 1700s France or something.

  • Freshman year of college, my friends group had to explain how stuff works to a member. She'd just gotten her first boyfriend and really needed The Talk.

My mom handled things by just leaving out a copy of "What's Happening to My Body?", but then again, I was a very bookish child.

  • My shoulder critic is my mom. I'm working on evicting her from my brain, but yeah. It's a thing.

  • I moved over to Podcast Addict from BeyondPod. I'm pretty happy here.

  • My current assessment is that having a gun in the house would increase the risk of a household member's suicidal ideation turning into suicide. That risk is higher than projected benefit of being able to shoot a threat in the face.

I grew up with guns. I've enjoyed shooting guns. I should not have a gun in the house..

I am team "know your neighbors and have a disaster readiness kit". My neighbors are great. We help each other.

  • They can also force transgender people in institutional settings (prison, college, military, etc) to be housed with the wrong gender. That can be dangerous.

  • My interpretation is that not everyone eligible/registered to vote in 2020 voted. The 88M includes folks that sat out Biden's election, too.

  • My therapist encourages me to reparent myself, by which they mean that when I remember something fucked up from my childhood I should try and imagine what would have happened in a loving and supportive environment. Also, they also encourage me to give myself experiences I missed out on as a child. Yes, I sleep with a plushie and it's awesome.

I have no idea what RFK, Jr means. Sounds like brainwashing.
