I'm a systems librarian in an academic library. I moved over the Lemmy after Rexxit 2023. I've had an account on sdf.org since 2009 (under a different username), and so I chose this instance out of a sense of nostalgia. I do all sorts of fiber arts (knitting, cross stitch, sewing) and love dogs.

  • What's your pain med of choice? I like children's chewable ibuprofen because I already have too many pills to swallow.

  • Why not share it with teacher?

  • Lucky! My local DMV doesn't take people without an appointment, and the only way to make an appointment is online. If you try over the phone they'll tell you to ask the nice people at the local library to help you.

Btw, they didn't tell the library about this policy. As a librarian, I do not like being an extension of the DMV, but I try and help my patrons. Including the dickhead that argued for the defunding of the library but now needs help making an appointment.

  • I don't think you understand what the Census is in the United States.

Every 10 years, each household gets a long form to fill out. In it, you voluntarily list a ton of information about your household members. If you don't fill it out people (census workers) come around and try and get this information in person.

The census is only as accurate as the people filling it out.

  • My impression at the time was the superintendent acted on his own. Not even the board of education was involved, and they weren't happy to be blindsided.

    My guess is the

    1. superintendent had a student in that grade,
    2. student came home with new textbook,
    3. superintendent saw the 'blasphemy' in the new-that-year textbooks,
    4. superintendent was his own Karen.
  • The thing that got me to significantly reduce my dairy consumption was

    1. Being exposed to vegetable milk (first soy then almond) by my roommates
    2. Not keeping fresh milk in the apartment because it kept going bad
    3. Losing the ability to gracefully digest lactose

I eat much less cow now because of cute internet cow videos.

Anyways, I think if 5 people reduce their consumption by 30% that's more impactful than 1 person reducing their consumption by 100%. (Math caveat: assuming each person has the same baseline level of consumption. 5 vegans reducing their consumption by 30% won't do squat).

  • In middle school our new science textbooks were recalled the first week of school. The textbooks discussed (horrors!) the big bang theory without also talking about the theistic theory. The books were returned with those pages rubber cemented together. The teachers were upset (upset enough that middle-school me noticed), but it was by order of the superintendent.

My parents got me a copy of A Brief History of Time in response. Also, rubber cement is fairly easy to pry apart.

  • Of course, having to teach science instead of their myth really upsets them too.

In my experience, it was in addition to. My high school biology teacher was a creationist who "taught the controversy".

  • 4:

    • English (native)
    • Spanish (school)
    • French (school)
    • Korean (Taekwondo)

Hopefully next week I'll add Polish--I'm on day 3 of learning it in an app.

  • And like when I had to move offices to make room for a temporarily displaced group that's still there 2 years later. They were supposed to be gone by summer.

  • Military service is one of the ways out of poverty we dangle at young people. I can't blame an 18-year-old for wanting in on the GI bill. Student loans suck.

  • My local Lowes turned me off by having their music blaring way, way too loud for some event. Like, needed earplugs on that half of the store loud.

Now Home Depot has turned me off by not having any human-run checkout counters anymore, and all the self checkouts have incredibly distracting "we're recording you" screens. Plus, you know, the politics.

The Ace hardware is still awesome and has a store dog (no outside dogs allowed). Store dog is a friendly, happy lab.

  • And the Wii can be Linuxed, if you get creative enough. Source: former roommate did it

  • It's spring (your hemisphere may vary) and time to set out tick tubes!

Tick tubes are cardboard tubes stuffed with cotton fluff soaked in permethrin. Mice use the cotton to make nests. The permethrin kills ticks on the mice, reducing the tick load of the area. It doesn't hurt the mice, and is much more targeted than just spraying the whole yard for insects.

  • Bob's Red Mill makes a powdered, shelf-stable egg substitute for baking purposes. I keep it on hand because I can't be arsed to keep real eggs in stock.

  • Nothing like something that sounds like a woman screaming to really liven up the neighborhood. Beautiful plumage, though.

  • Bots lie about who they are, ignore robots.txt, and come from a gazillion different IPs.
