  • But, being real, after 5 blades, all the satires jumped to unrealistic numbers and more extreme silliness. It was like the various comedy writers figured out that the various razor companies would be glad to slap one more on there, and sell it as an entirely new thing that needed a new handle as well. So they said (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ and went hard.

Are you telling me the Gillette Facefuckerupper of legend isn’t real?

(The Wenger Giant was a real novelty product. Yes I hate consumerism yes I hate “collector” culture but it tickles my brain just right to imagine that I’ll be able to snag one someday. They’re really expensive rarities now and serve no practical purpose but they do reveal that stodgy old Swiss executives can still have a sense of humor. Until then, the trusty no-name gas station multi tool is perfectly usable.)

  • Libre will really only ever be a French word to me so that’s how I always thought it would be pronounced. With an Americanish R sound.

    Leeb-roffice

librɔfəs / librɑfəs for you IPA enjoyers

  • My favorite is the one of him uh hanging out with his friend Mussolini but I’m not sure .world is willing to host that one lol

  • These were no less atrocious than current Wojak format comics.

FWIW I liked that people scribbled out their shitty ideas, often with zero artfulness in MS Paint, giving it just enough effort to get the idea across. I’m seeing a lot of lazy AI images being passed around using the Twitter image generator and it’s like there’s no threshold for something to actually be funny before being posted.

  • Hijacking your comment to point out that my community, Lebanese Christians, typically tend to have a bootlicking problem. And an unparalleled superiority complex. Apparently Vance attended a Lebanese church the night of the US election and people were acting like the US, in a righteous turn of the wheel of history, will finally turn a page and become an undisputed force for good (it will protect Lebanon(‘s Christians, only) and stop exporting the sex and the trans)

I know what you’re thinking. Surely this jackass on Lemmy doesn’t think the shitheads around him can outdo American exceptionalism. Oh baby.

(In the following rant I’m banging out bits of mainstream political and sectarian thought in my ethnoreligious group. I’m not endorsing these horrible ideas. Not everyone is going to tick all of these boxes, but the point is to give an overview for those who care.)

Y’know how you do a census in your country? Any country. You count the people so you know how to set policy. We don’t do that here. In 1932, the French colonial government counted the population. 50% Christian. 50% Muslim. Our Parliament is split by sect and not just by district, so that means I can only vote for my district’s Christian seats (technically the seats for my specific flavor of Christianity… yeah).

Since 1932, I’m sure you’ll be shocked to learn, demographics have changed. Christian areas, with their higher rates of education and income, have not seen the same birth rates as other areas. The Christian population can also emigrate more easily to countries with higher standards of living. The reasons why (and mechanics of) the disenfranchisement of other communities (especially Shia Muslim communities) are a whole thing and I won’t get into it now. But as it stands, the Muslim population has grown considerably since 1932. Let’s say it’s 60% (it’s more).

So it’s illegal to check, because it would “upset” the “correct” balance of power. And it’s not just politicians. The average Christian will not only tell you “we’re” artificially holding on to power, but that it’s critical to do so because the other guys can’t govern.

It’s late here and I had a long workday so I can’t bang out the full rant here. But there’s a lot of cultural nuance that might be hard to grasp for outsiders. Whiteness as a concept is a fascinating social phenomenon. In the mind of the very sharpest tools in the shed, it’s a classical Europeanness, a type of inherent ability to do civilization. Lebanese Christians, generally, see themselves in this lens. We are, in some way, mythical long-lost Europeans, being crabs-in-a-bucketed back into a miserable existence by our misguided cousins. We gave Europe Christianity, our sacred ancient treasure. We gave it its fucking name. Oh you Americans think you’re white? You diseased misceganated mongrel barbarian pagans? We are whiter than you. We are not Arabs, we are Phoenicians, we are the true authors of history and the true creators of commerce and writing and civilization and— (for further reading, I recommend looking into Phoenicianism and Lebanese Christian Nationalism. The former isn’t necessarily relevant on the surface, but is a good representation of the hyperexceptionalist worldview. I veered a bit into hyperbole, but I assure you, I’ve heard the kernel of all of these from people I expected better of)

I don’t believe this, I hope it doesn’t need saying. In my view, we are normal people. Lebanese Christians have been no kinder to the people around them than the others have been to them. Same shit, different toilet.

No, literally, different toilet. The Muslims all have bidets. As does my “self-hating” Christian ass (haha ass). God help me if I need to take a dump in a public bathroom in “my” parts of the country. Why don’t we adopt them? Well, it’s a Muslim thing, so even if it’s cleaner, we don’t do it. Because we’re actually the clean ones. And they are dirty. Not like us. Not like the protagonists of world history.

You need to induce vomiting? Open Twitter and search for “Shia” or “Shias”. Look at what people around me think is funny. Twitter is a cesspit and has become worse lately, but Lebanese hate speech has always been overlooked by moderation and has had a decade of head start over what more people are dealing with now. It’s worse when you understand that they don’t even really necessarily hate them for their religion, this is at least partially hatred of the poor, the people who “proper” society has given nothing for a century.

I’m going way, way, way off the rails here. I appreciate that one person’s rant about his own community’s bigotry doesn’t even begin to explain a two millennia of self-propagating Sisyphean sectarian violence. I can go for pages and pages but the point I’m making is

This guy didn’t just think the leopards wouldn’t eat his face. He thought, in a world of leopards and gazelles, that he is the strong ranger with a gun (and cool sunglasses. His name is Bachir after all). It didn’t even occur to him, not for a second, that any of this could touch him. He thought it could backfire on the dumb hicks, but he’s special. He knew fully well that the administration he voted for was made of despicable people. He’s not the “dumb” conservative who thinks they have values or principles. He knew and understood, explicitly, the oft-repeated concept that “conservatism” boils down to drawing laws around people A to put people B above said law. It’s not a secret to him. It’s what he believes in.

I’m still not sure I’m being clear.

Due to his background, I believe he absolutely knew that people were going to get fucked with arbitrarily. And he explicitly thought he was deeper into the ingroup than even the average member of the ingroup and that he was actually untouchable. There’s every chance he’s a bigger bigot than any klansman would even know how to be.

End rant. Everything is fine. Don’t look up the size of the US embassy being built in my country. Everything is totally normal.

“The Town Priest Refuses to Pray for Palestine and that Really Pisses Me Off Even Though I’m Agnostic (But Don’t Tell The State That or I Won’t Be Able to Vote or Get Married)”, “QAnon in the Middle East: a Mind-Melting Primer”, “Our Priests Generally Don’t Diddle Kids (So We Imported One Who Does)”, and the fan-favorite “The Western Christian Persecution Narrative Complex as Understood Through the Lens of Eastern Christians’ Very Real History of Horrific Sectarian Violence: Syncretism, Life, Death, and The Jews™”.

Someone take away this keyboard from me before I write something so based the local mob will bury me alive for it.

  • I don’t see the humor in it anymore. Whenever it comes to even admitting the crimes happening to/in Palestine, it’s always decent people getting the entire book thrown at them, while others who actually do something evil get off scott free.

You can’t just ask for accountability for crimes. You have to kiss the ring and you have to be made an example of. What we are seeing with the response to student action is actually unprecedented and it’s genuinely unhinged. And it’s not just the US, it’s most of Europe too.

It’s not enough that our brothers and sisters in Palestine are getting rounded up and massacred. You have to support it with every fiber of your being or you’re a terrorist. After planing my whole life to move to the West I’m now genuinely scared I’ll be jailed for thought crime if it keeps getting crazier.

  • Funnily enough, I have a high ratio for that torrent. I've shared that first 80 odd percent dozens of times. I'll keep it in my daily driver list of permaseeds for sure.

  • It has to be a driver thing from my side. I use a laptop that's made by a Chinese ODM, so driver support for the onboard stuff can be a bit lacking after the following model releases. It's just how it is. My LAN adapters' settings have wake-on-LAN disabled.

I think something about the sleep state isn't working quite right because of that. Windows' own Event Viewer reporting system will just tell me it exited a sleep state for an unknown reason.

Edit: I might have replied to the wrong comment lol. Should be some Wake-On-Lan thing in your case, I think.

  • Oh man, the lower half of this image was everywhere ten odd years ago. Or maybe longer. Shit.

It’s just “Oooooh, burn!” in a sarcastically distant tone. Almost like it’s a daily occurrence.

I never quite liked it even if it looks very fake. The particular stab at humor it went for didn’t really do it for me.

  • Gregorz Brzeczyszczykiewicz would like a word

  • I swear that week has broken something and revealed so much pent up cruelty towards my part of the world from American shitheads specifically. Didn’t even know they’d care to remember where we are on a map.

And to think I’ve been eying the US as a possible new home not that long ago. Just so icky

  • I’ve always been curious about this stuff and I know I need to make some effort soon, ever since we moved our home recordings from VHS to DVD some 15-20 years ago.

My understanding is that SSDs are also likely to lose data when unpowered for a long time, which is why they haven’t been recommended to me for external backup drives.

“Spinning rust” is much cheaper than I thought, even if I have to pay 200$ in shipping to get a bunch of massive used server drives here. And it seems to not have that problem, with the downside of either needing to be completely powered off or wasting a bit of power when it’s not active. I’m still not sure where the HDD parking technology is at.

Of course ripping all the physical media would also be nice. A lot of the original discs I have (most of my discs are straight shitty copies with one file, yay third world) have things like special features and multiple audio tracks, things like that. I wonder how those should be organized.

  • I think that one used simple Markov chains and was really entertaining for years.

I also remember there was a bot you could summon that would simulate a comment written by you, and it was funny to see those.

  • The invention of the torque wrench didn’t severely impede my ability to retrieve stored information, and everyone else’s, affecting me by proxy.

The tech four years ago was impressive but for me it’s only done two things since becoming widely available: thinned the soup of Internet fun things, and made some people, disproportionally executives at my work, abandon a solid third of their critical thinking skills.

I use AI models locally, to turn around little jokes for friends, you could say I’ve put more effort into machine learning tools than many daily AI users. And I’ll be the first to call the article described by OP as a true, shameful indictment of us as a species.

  • I just looked up my orders, it’s the H16. Looking more closely at the receipts it seems like there’s different models with different max brightness but whatever ,they’re all blindingly bright, for me at least, a non flashlight person.

They’re also nominally waterproof, they’ve got a strong magnet at the base so you can stick it places while you work, and comes with a headband attachment and a belt clip.

The bulb is angled which was weird to me at first. I also had to learn the controls over time since there’s one button but several brightness settings.

I hate how promotion-heavy the internet has gotten because it feels like even writing out any endorsement feels like shilling. But it’s a cool little thing. I’m sure there’s more models out there that might appeal to you by other manufacturers but I’m happy with this one.

  • What do you mean? Early apps was all stuff like this that nobody used. Nowadays apps are useful fintech services and photo filter apps that cost less than a coffee per month and fun free games that everyone can play, isn’t that much better?

    /s

  • I’ve bought myself exactly one “nice” flashlight and it was a big shock seeing how good the tech has gotten since phones took that over in my life. Some Acebeam model with a ridiculous bulb and a convenient rechargeable AAA battery with a USB C port. It’s tiny and super neat.

While I haven’t bought multiple, I did buy more of the same model for family members to carry around. For what it’s worth I don’t really keep it on me, but if you carry a purse or whatever, a powerful finger-sized flashlight could definitely come in handy without being bulky.

I’ve actually written a bit about my gripes with the EDC subculture online, which is how I learned about the flashlight in the first place. TLDR is that there is a weird disconnect that can’t be ignored between a rational interest in preparedness and the phenomenon of online communities of users goading each other into buying more and more widgets, sometimes with financial incentives to make others buy things.

It’s not just flashlights, it’s a whole bunch of things. EDC is a rabbit hole of rabbit holes and while I do appreciate having a lot of options and reviews for said options I genuinely think it’s a consumerist disappointment if you zoom back out.

  • This is exactly why I’d want a GPU in a home server.

That and transcoding. Wonder what the best option would be without breaking the bank/wasting too much idle power. All the GPU talk online seems to be for gaming.
