  • The Play Store has recently (I think about 3 years ago?) introduced delayed updates for things like download counts because they were battling faked statistics (e.g. the download counter could be manipulated by bot farms), so now downloads are accumulated and checked against users actually using the app and having it on their devices - which takes time to update so IIRC they now only update that counter every month. Hence the 0+ downloads.

    Meaning you would buy an adapter that is active, which means it needs to pay HDMI royalties.

    Basically, you'd be paying double to the HDMI Forum, to get around their shittiness.

  • Also, Jellyfin supports LDAP backing, so OP could set up PocketID with an LLDAP backing server (minor extra complexity). Managing passwords will still be a chore as PocketID does not support neither setting them up nor syncing it with LDAP (it can read and authenticate LDAP users, not write them), but then Jellyfin can work without the OIDC plugin, just using the LDAP login approach.

    PocketID does offer a fallback to a numeric code for clients that don't support passkeys (e.g. most embedded webviews on mobile).

    For those, you simply need to navigate to the PocketID interface (for less technically adept people you can put it on the home screen on their phones), and click the big center button "Create" in the "Login Code" section (see attached screenshot).

    Unfortunately these login codes are long lived (10-15 minute I believe?) and aren't OTP compatible so you can't just register it in a code provider to use whenever needed.

  • There's a level of food sufficiency one can achieve on their own, even without land. e.g. I'm putting together a medium scale hydroponics system right now for home - it needs 100-120cm of wall, 30cm deep at its thickest point, and can grow about 120 separate spots.

    Now obviously hydroponics is not an easy answer for all food needs. You can't easily grow wheat and other grains/cereals in the volume you'd need. You can't grow larger fruits that require trees. Smaller fruits - tomatoes, cucumbers, berries are usually pretty doable. And of course tons of herbs and spices - rocket/arugula, basil, mint, you name it.

    If anything, the herbs alone are worth setting up a small home unit, especially since it's so effort-free - add water, measure nutrients, repeat once a week, harvest in 3-4 weeks earliest, trim it proper and freeze for long term storage, and you don't even need to re-plant things because most of what you'd grow in hydroponics, when trimmed right, just grows again.

    Again, this doesn't solve all the issues, but having some freshly grown herbs at least is a good way to get started with "grow your own", even if on full scale it's impossible.

    And don't use Chrome... as if we had a selection of browsers to pick from on iOS (and don't get me started with crap like Vivaldi or Opera or Brave) that support plugins.

  • AdGuard has many products that "works on" iOS.

    The main app is a glorified localhost VPN (it runs a basic VPN-like server locally and redirects all the traffic through the app, allowing for DNS based filtering). This uses the official AdGuard servers and allows for no configuration whatsoever.

    One step better is taking the time to grab their DNS profile for iOS which allows for DNS based filtering without the VPN app constantly running.

    An even better step to take is to use the AdGuard DNS service - it's basically like a hosted version of AdGuard Home, but it's paid, limited in queries and devices, on the other hand you have control over the blocking (add exceptions, custom blocklists, rules and so on). This service allows setting up different "servers" (rulesets) you can assign to different devices, and everything is controlled from one interface, which is nice.

    And the best is what I do, self-hosting AdGuard Home with custom blocklists, and a privacy focused approach (AGH serves as my local DNS resolver for my home network and VPNs over port 53, and 443 with a Caddy proxy in front for DoH outside the network, with a secret subdomain approach per device so only my own devices can abuse my DNS server).

    Then there's the browser plugin based filtering that literally looks at the incoming HTML and picks out the ads. That unfortunately does not work with either Chrome or Firefox on iOS.
