  • If you're just looking for appointment scheduling then Easy!Appointments may work. It has a self-hosted version. Note: I've not tested it, I just went searching online because I was curious.

    Aside from that, there looks to be a ton of WordPress plugins you can use, though they usually have a (smallish) cost associated with them.

  • No idea about your specific case, but in the past when I've had frequent zombies it's been due to some blocking network process; typically NFS mounts.

    They don't use any resources, but I agree they're annoying and could indicate some underlying issue.

    I would check for issues with I/O and network access, especially anything that happens at kernel level. Look for anything suspicious in dmesg.

  • Ugh. I've been holding out until now.

    I've tried a ton of others but the only one I even half like is Lawnchair. The others are too restricted, too annoying or too creepy.

    Does anyone know how to replicate the custom groups/tabs of apps inside the app drawer?

    The app drawer and ability to choose my own search engine are what keeps me on it. I don't want "smart" anything, just let me control it.

  • They have many ways to do this if they want:

    • go after US entities, like the Linux Foundation. They only need to go after enough to make them fall in line
    • Make it illegal to distribute non compliant systems, including downloads
    • Make it illegal to operate or even possess a non compliant system

    Even if they don't go after individuals they can do a lot of damage in restricting trade and business use of something. The mere threat of legal action is though to make business owners nope out.

    It's already risky to draw attention to yourself by using privacy focused phones when traveling. It's the ultimate "if your have nothing to hide why are you worried" situation.

    They're forcing legitimate users to either give up or go underground and risk being seen as criminals.

  • I'm not a cyber security expert, but I think about it this way:

    First, consider your threat model. What could possibly go wrong? What do I do if the worst thing happens? What information do I need to protect? If everything is already public (like blog posts), maybe there isn't much of a threat of information loss. If you keep your tax documents on there, maybe rethink that.

    Second: think defense in depth. None of these measures will make you totally safe, but every barrier is another thing that can make a hacker's life more difficult. You move the ssh port and it's not as easily found by someone who's just literally scanning the entire Internet for open ssh ports. It's trivial to find, sure, but at least you dodged one bullet.

    OK, they found your ssh port. Now they're gonna start scanning for common username/password combinations. Fail2ban will stop this by blocking access after a few failures. If your credentials have leaked somewhere, the hackers may have a good guess at it though. But you're OK because you're using a key pair not your usual password (please don't have a "usual password").

    Bad luck: they guessed your password. Or maybe they exploited a bug in your web server software (must have been a zero-day because you kept things up to date). Their exploit needs to open a server port for them to talk to, though. You blocked it on your firewall so that didn't work. They try a reverse shell, but you blocked outgoing connections, too. Well done.

    And on it goes.

    If they keep trying, they will eventually succeed, but they have to try a lot harder when you lock things down, and the longer they are at it, the more opportunity you have to notice.

  • Windows XP wasn't good until SP2 or 3, and then it was only better for gaming IMO.

    Windows 2000 was super solid and what I used for work. But XP was better for games at the time.

    XP was also "free" for a lot of people thanks to a certain volume license key.

  • Excellent point. Same for most European countries, I think.

    Another date confusion things is weeks. Europeans use week numbers a lot ("I'm on vacation weeks 34-37") but that's very rare in the US. And the week numbers aren't (always) the same anyway. In the US we use "I'm on vacation the week of

    ", which honestly is a lot easier to understand without referencing a calendar.

  • There is a rule but it's not really well known so people just follow whatever rule they deduced from usage. People have to qualify which one they mean almost every time. I usually say "this coming Thursday" (this week), or "Thursday next week" instead.

  • I use Merlinwrt on my Asus router. They have a bit longer support and I think it's open source. May be worth looking into.

  • It only happens with ISO weeks. An example is 2006. Each of the weeks belong to different years (so 2005W52 and 2006W52 are different), but each can contain days from another year. So for example Sunday 2006-01-01 is part of week 52 of 2005. Week 1 starts on January 2. Then at the end of 2006 you have another week 52, but that week is actually part of 2006.

    It's a bit of a cheeky thing to point out, because at no point is a day in two different weeks, and the week itself only belongs to one year. It's just that you can't assume that any given day belongs to the same year as the week it is in. That is: 2006-01-01 is in 2005W52 not 2006W01.

  • Each month would be named after one of Elon Musk's children, but the names would be randomized every year (any future children are added to the rotation). Eventually this becomes impossible to keep up with and we just end up using numbers anyway, which is fine with me.
