  • Billionaires are ruining it. Don't let the NYT shift the blame.

  • No need for the /s. That's exactly what it is. It's a money grab and a bid for more control and surveillance we cannot dodge.

  • And any vulnerable bystanders who can't be vaccinated and depend on herd immunity.

  • I think you've missed the point a bit. It's "better" only from the Nazis' point of view. Stuart Russell is not saying that it would be better. He thinks it would be worse, because people or AIs being better at Nazism is worse for the world overall. He's saying AI is a threat to the world because right now it's in the hands of people (many of them fascists) who ignore the dangers.

Here's the whole thing without paywall:

    https://archive.is/dghny

  • "It's different when it's me" should be the slogan of right-wingers everywhere.

  • It will only have an effect if the fines threaten their profits, and that seems unlikely.

  • It says something about our current world that, having read the headline and not knowing who this guy is, I expected him to a booster of both AI and Nazism. It's a relief to find he means this as a criticism.

  • We could always just not, and use whatever RAM we can get. I'd rather have a thriving market with slightly worse RAM than motherboards that require a RAM no one can afford.

  • Just another case of not caring about anything until it directly affects them.

  • In Canada we're facing the same question. Our government just hurried through Bill C-22 without debate, which grants the government access to encrypted communications (so, compromised encryption) and mandates retention of metadata. Signal has said it will leave Canada if this becomes law, as have some VPN companies.

This is a worldwide coordinated attack on privacy and free speech, which is one reason why "I'll just VPN to another country" isn't a solution. And even if everyone finds technical workarounds and breaks the law together, it empowers governments to start enforcing the law selectively based on people's politics. Anyone organizing an environmental protest, a queer rights movement or a left-wing party will soon experience such selective enforcement.

  • for the common good.

I don't think these people understand that phrase. They do what they're paid the most to do.

  • This sounds difficult for him. The number of crass jokes people feel compelled to make reminds me of what trans people have long had to suffer. When someone's going through something unfamiliar to us, let's not just reach for the cheapest shots but try to be a bit more compassionate.

  • If Democrats were godless communists they might actually help improve life for ordinary Americans. Unfortunately they're mostly neoliberals, like the Republicans were before they came out as fascist.

A generous helping of godless communism would do the USA some good.

  • Let's hope.

  • We built the library. Someone else started charging admission.

    Capitalism working as intended.

  • Your comment suggests, intentionally judging by your comment history, that "Jewish" is opposed to "American", and that we should suspect all Jews of putting Israel first. You also posted in a previous comment that you wished a man who attacked a synagogue had been more successful. And you suggested that Jewish entertainers tend to be pedophiles. I hope people can see where you're coming from. This is real antisemitism.

And before anyone accuses me of being an Israel supporter, I find Zionism repellent, I abhor Israel's genocide of Palestinians and its invasion of Lebanon, and I'm in full sympathy with the Palestinian people. Israel is a sick country right now. But a Jew is not the same thing as a Zionist, and many American Jews feel just as I do about these things.

  • It may not even be that they advertised kayaking to you. They may just have a very good model of your behaviour that predicts you're likely to be interested in kayaking.

  • Almost everything just works after installing sandboxed Google Play Services. For a few apps you have to tweak a setting to turn off some of GrapheneOS's exploit protections. But I've found very few that refuse to run, and nothing indispensable. If you don't like your main profile having Play Services you can set them up under a second profile or a private area and keep the apps that use them away from your main profile.
