  • You are totally right but no one makes arm hardware as good as Apple. Linux alternatives are raspberry pi level (not something you can use for serious computing) or windows locked down system on chip with no driver and worse performance. Linux works on intel and amd for now and none of them produce something as good as Apple silicon.

    EDIT: I do not understand the downvote. This is factual truth. You may not like it but benchmark are clear. There is no competitor for an M5 max in term of efficiency, performance, memory bandwidth as CPU+GPU package for laptop. I know it is not supported yet by Asahi, but the quality on Apple silicon was unmatched for the M4 all the way down to the M1.

  • Just so you know, AdGuard Home exists, that is more or less the same as PiHole but uses less resources. I run it on my router (and I use the router firewall directly to force the DNS to AdGuard) with SSL certificates automatic renewal with certbot so that encryption is supported. I think you can ask an AI for help on your specific setup.

  • Correct, pihole alone cannot fix it. You can fix the issue of hardcoded DNS with a firewall translating requests to DNS into another DNS, but that also has issue with DNS over https. The only reliable way I saw for YouTube Ad block is either custom apps or browser level Adblock like Brave Shield (which Firefox is also integrating as it is open source)

  • MacBook since Apple silicon have the best processors (performance, battery life, feature support) in any laptop. Software development is much more similar to Linux and local LLM just work with the best unified memory bandwidth of any other device (recent nvidia RTX Spark is shit compared to a MacBook M5 Max).

    Apple is shit, with anticonsumer practices, but actually has the best hardware, ok software, wide support for long time and ok stability. It is not perfect, but better then windows laptops on hardware and software while being worse then Linux laptop in some use case and better in other use case.

  • Siri AI has privileged access to all your private data and apps. The EU force Apple to give the same access Siri AI has to third party. Current Siri AI access is unsafe, therefore third party will be unsafe. Apple just need to design a safe environment for both Siri AI and third party. That includes the ability to read and send messages, make purchases, access files, and execute actions across any app.

    This is what Siri AI is doing.

    The EU rejected Apple decision to not follow the law by giving Siri AI privileged access to users private data and apps while preventing others to do the same.

Why is Apple AI more trustworthy with my data then Mistral AI? This is just anti-consumer monopoly enforcement disguised as care for the users.     a DNS AdBlocker just stop a request to a specific domain. If youtube serves video and ads from the same server you do not know which one is an ads and which one is a video on the DNS level. Furthermore you have some devices hardcoding DNS server (google homes are common for calling google DNS directly instead of getting the DNS from the Router) which makes it very hard to use DNS level AdBlockers.

    Google spends a lot of money mixing ads and legit content to make it impossible to block, it is not safari "letting ads through" is more like safari cannot identify ads anymore.

While I agree that Spotify is bad regarding some practices, as a person that listen to music I am not as negatively affected by those policies as with others video streaming platforms. Same with steam: while there are some questionable practices linked with steam as monopoly, from a consumer prospective it is still not “shitty”.

  • While this is totally true, you cannot fault the EU for not acting on the in-house science team info given the EU commission had no authority on policing car manufacturers. At the time that was the duty of national authorities. Now the EU commission has granted itself the power to conduct vehicle audits and fine those responsible. Positives changes over embarrassing scandals are a positive outcome to me, and not the norm in modern politics.

  • The EU did not prevent Dieselgate because the EU was lacking the regulatory framework to do so. And after Dieselgate, lots of new laws were put into place to address a market wide breach of consumer law (the representative actions directive and the omnibus directive). That is exactly what a good governing body should do: act within the boundaries of the law, and improve the law when something bad happens. I very much doubt it will happen again. We are talking billions in fines before there was an actual framework in place to address this. Today the result could be in the tens of billions.

  • How is dieselgate the fault of the EU? The main offender was Volkswagen. Chat Control and Qatargate are the result of lobbying and corruption, and while the EU is not immune to this kind of influences (being a government body made by people), the aggregate result of EU bureaucracy is much better then any other power block currently active in the world in my opinion.
