  • How do I become good at fishing?

  • Location is very important. If you don't get any nibbles or see anything jump, try moving to a different spot.

    Time of day and patience are key. Sometimes you'll get bite after bite, and then the next time at the same spot, nothing.

    Also try switching up your bait if it's not working, but you think there are fish there, as they can be picky eaters. Using shiny lures seems to work well.

    Never underestimate the effectiveness of giving the line a little jiggle as you reel it in to simulate live prey.

    I like to bring gloves to protect my hands from sharp fins (some can cut the shit out of you easily), as well as pliers to remove the hook as quickly and painlessly as possible.

  • Like others have said, $100 is a lot. That's the kind of gift one might expect from a direct family member. $50 would be plenty.

    Flowers and chocolate on top of that will come off as trying too hard and showing romantic interest. Spare yourself the accusations and tension it will cause between you and your friend. It's a very easy target that people this age will make fun of you for, even if you just intended to be polite.

  • My last name is neither my mom or dad's. It's my mom's ex-husband's from before I was born. I guess she still legally had the name after they split, and I inherited it - not her side of the family or my father's last name, since they weren't married. So I carry a last name for some family I'm not a part of biologically or otherwise, and have never met anyone from that family. And I'm estranged from the entirety of both sides of my biological family, so neither of those names would be viable replacements.

    It does and has always bothered me a bit. I've never felt pride about my name or where I came from. I've never felt the sense of family that my friends seemed to have. Or the sense of identity that might come from wearing a jersey with your last name across the back. I just feel like a misfit, so in a way this misfit name is kind of appropriate. It's hasn't been a priority to change it, and nobody gives a shit for spite to have any effect. They would never find out.

  • Since you're not sure what you want to do, I say don't pursue a specific career, but pursue a field that interests you. You might not have the luxury of finding a job opening for exactly what you want, even if you did have something specific in mind, but by having relevant skills you can get closer and eventually find something that works for you.

    I went to school for a certain field, found a job that was in no way related, and eventually got a position there that did use my education (I was chosen because of it). 10 years later, found a new company in "my field" that uses both my education and the skills from the previous job that I thought would never be useful elsewhere. The more things you can put on your resume, the better, especially in a world where AI will be screening thousands of applications for the most keywords.

  • Maybe I'm missing something, but that link seems to indicate it's down, -2.26% YTD.

    My short answer to why it's not down more is simply not enough time has passed for it to impact earnings reports. If all the tariff threats are implemented and stick around, it could be a red summer. And don't forget that most Canadians are boycotting anything made in the US. We just don't know how much of an impact that will have yet.

  • Ontario, Canada. For me it's Shawarma poutine.

    Classic poutine is already amazing, and there are all sorts of variations, but shawarma poutine just hits the spot like no other. It still has the fries, gravy, and cheese curds, and they add chicken swarma, hot sauce, and toum (garlic sauce).

    Maximum comfort food, especially to watch a movie with in the winter.

    And also what you mean by "lyrics" - the words only, leaving a voice singing notes? Or no vocals at all?

    If you can provide an example song and say specifically which parts to remove it will be easier to understand the question.

  • I've been sleeping like shit. The air mattress I sleep on has a slow leak and deflates halfway through the night. It's also been cold af for the last 3 months and the baseboard heater isn't enough to heat the room.

    On the bright side I finally found a job, so the threat of homelessness is subsiding. I'm looking forward to getting a real bed, now that I know I'll have a place to keep it.

  • It's been a long time since I gave Sony money, but if they did release Bloodborne on PC I would buy it on day one. It seems like emulation will be a reality before that.
