  • Low orbit satellites will never replace fiber because physics of latency, bandwidth and error correction.

    As far as things go today well never need less fiber. Even if we cover the sky with satellites eventually we'd need to upgrade to fiber because its literally impossible to beat. Except for scifi tech like quantum entanglement networks which might not even be possible or practical and wouldn't need the satelites anyway.

    As an infrastructure bet it makes absolutely zero sense except for covering rare niches like war zones or oceans.

  • lmao imagine shilling for corporate Cloudflare like this. Also false positive vs false negative are fundamentally not equal.

    Cloudflare is probably aware that there are still some false positive, and probably is working on it as we write.

    The main issue with Cloudflare is that it's mostly bullshit. It does not report any stats to the admins on how many users were rejected or any false positive rates and happily put's everyone under "evil bot" umbrella. So people from low trust score environments like Linux or IPs from poorer countries are under significant disadvantage and left without a voice.

    I'm literally a security dev working with Cloudflare anti-bot myself (not by choice). It's a useful tool for corporate but a really fucking bad one for the health of the web, much worse than any LLM agent or crawler, period.

  • Thats not how it works. Cf uses thousands of variables to estimate a trust score and block people so just because it works for you doesn't mean it works.

  • Cloudflare actually fully fingerprints your browser and even sells that data. Thats your IP, TLS, operating system, full browser environment, installed extensions, GPU capabilities etc. It's all tracked before the box even shows up, in fact the box is there to give the runtime more time to fingerprint you.

    To expand on this, current leading theory (predictive processing) says that brain first generates a visual image then confirms it with inputs and if there's no input to confirm/deny the halucination it's just accepted as is. So we can have a whole load of blind spots in all of our sensors and continue functioning rather well with an ocassional artifact.

  • Getting into philosophy and ethics. Contemporary Stoicism in particular is very freeing and empowering. Theres this concept in Stoicism (and Buddhism) of "dichotomy of control" where some things can't be controled like thoughts emerging or you dying but you can control your reaction to all of that.

    Another concept from Stoicism that relates to community is the idea of "festival" which is basically being intentionally mindful of how awesome crowds are - the fact that a diverse group of people gather together for some shared activity or just to hang out is enough for you to enjoy it!

  • I think you're low key conflating 2 different issues here.

    When it comes to technology of fiber vs low orbit satellites fiber will always win in every circumstance that isn't a battle field or an ocean. It's one of those technologies that we really nailed. Combined with cell towers we can tap ourselves on the back and say "yay we solved internet" very convincingly.

    There's literally nothing in current practical physics that can match this latency and bandwidth and cost ration. Just try to do napkin math of how many low orbit satellites we'd need to cover today's bandwidth and latency requirements and we will literally never need less than what we need today unless the world ends.

    Now whether corruption has a role here sure - but you sure your trusting SpaceX more when its literally on the news right now for bait and switching the pause feature. There's no basis of thinking that Starlink would somehow be less corrupt. In fact, it seems like hiding corruption here would be much easier for starlink with feature changes and priority lanes than literal "cable is here or cable is not here".
