  • A huge swathe of smart devices literally just need some way to turn them on or off without needing to be right next to them. A kettle, for example, that could be activated a minute or two after my alarm goes off so it finishes boiling as I step into the kitchen would be quite nice (though not terribly necessary). Equally, an oven or air fryer that could be turned on remotely to pre-heat might be nice.

    But honestly, I don't have a single smart appliance in my kitchen, and I can't say I'm the poorer for it.

  • I have a smart LG that, as of today, has had its internet privileges revoked because it installed yet another update that changed how our shit works. 100% of our TV viewing is done through an Apple TV, but I kept the LG online for the odd occasion that I wanted to cast my phone to it to show my wife something.

    But nope. No more will our LG talk to the internet. It's lost the right.

  • As someone with ADHD, I 100% agree about the watches.

    Personally, I have an old Garmin and literally all I use it for is; telling the time; alarms; notifications of messages (Signal, WhatsApp, SMS, and that's it) and calls; and counting my daily steps. That's it. And that's all I need it to do.

    If I had to take my phone out every time it buzzed with a notification, I'd lose at least 15 minutes to scrolling. Instead my watch buzzes, I see who the message is from, and then either take my phone out and reply/answer, or ignore it to look at later.

    I've had an iPhone and Apple Watch in the past, and was never really able to work out much of a use-case scenario for spending that kind of money on one, but to each their own, I guess.

  • As a Mac user who's migrated over to Linux over the past year or so, I've got an idea of where OP is coming from.

    Docker on macOS is accessed via a Desktop GUI, so you can easily see what you have installed, how it's running, etc... So when I shifted over to Linux, I was thrown off by there being no such tool. I wasn't used to using a terminal to do everything, and grumbled quite a lot about there being no Docker Desktop GUI, given how many self-hostable services run through Docker.

    I've since gotten used to it, but it really is quite jarring.

    Back in 2007 I embarked on a three year radio production degree, and the costs associated with that, all so I could start my own radio show 18 years later where I get people to suggest songs and I play them. And many of them I've never heard of.

  • Personally, the vast majority of my smart home stuff is light automation. It's nice having a selection of lights automatically turn on half an hour before sunset, and it's nice having a button next to my bed that either turns on the reading lamps, or turns off all the lights in the house depending on how long I press it.

    Though in fairness, I am drifting back towards having my lights controlled by buttons, because voice control is mostly bollocks. But now the lights font have to be the ones wired in to the house. It can be any that I can add to Home Assistant.
