  • How do you go no contact with someone in the U.S. if they have your full name, DOB, and SSN?

  • As long as you're not in the same city, they're not going to know where you went if you don't tell them. Leave, change your number, don't post on social media. You will be shocked at how much instantly easier your life gets when you leave.

  • Young guys fall into it when they're lonely, don't know how to talk to girls, and don't have any better role models. There's an element of "You need to grow up and do the hard thing" to it.

  • There is love that builds you up and love that tears you down. It can be hard to tell them apart while you're experiencing them.

  • In your opinion is reading War and Peace the same accomplishment as listening to the audiobook? Why or why not?

  • To be clear, I'm not assuming he's reading it in Russian. It's just that the famous ones that are published in English are very wordy. Long sentences, and the development of the ideas is long, complex, and not laid out straight like a typical hollywood story or simpler novel. They need to be thought about and discussed. Russian naming conventions also often confuse English readers, because they use multiple different names to refer to the same character.

  • In your opinion is reading War and Peace the same accomplishment as listening to the audiobook? Why or why not?

  • Listening to the audiobook is the same as reading if you are actively listening. When it comes to Russian writing, I am skeptical that you are fully absorbing the information just passively listening to it. But if you feel that you are, then it's reading.

    overall there's not a lot here relative to reddit. as a warning, lemmy.ml is a community centered around pro-communist/anti-capitalist ideology, and some there can get hostile to people who don't share their beliefs.

  • It's because they are pandemic kids. Schools refused to adapt to the fact that the kids basically lost 2 years of education. Instead of giving the 5th graders 3rd grade materials, they just let the kids who lacked foundation fall further and further behind. It impacted every grade level, but the ones who were younger were the worst impacted. Research shows if you're behind on reading in 3rd grade, you'll probably be behind for the rest of your time in school.

  • It's all fun and games until it ruins your life. I support a total ban, akin to gambling. There's no reason anyone needs to do it.

  • School bus driver isn't strictly unskilled, but it's 80% a skill you already have. You can even be a van driver instead of a bus.

  • One of my coworkers lives here, and there is a guy who works at the grocery store who always says hello to me. So, 2.

  • Some of the lemmy.ml people are weirdly intolerant of beliefs that they don't personally hold. It's not the userbase as a whole. You just gotta expect it from them.

  • US is a classist society. They want to keep a large % of the population in poverty so that there's a large base of workers to exploit. The rich are more than willing to pay for their own kids' schools but not everyone's. Keep in mind that over 60% of the US has a bachelors degree- twice that of Denmark/Germany. The US has more wealth in general but still, that's a lot more schools than just the ones the rich kids go to. The reason we have so many more people going to college is that during deindustrialization, the workers were not protected. The government did nothing to help workers find new jobs or retrain. It was on the individual to figure out how to survive. People were told to go to college to attain a middle class lifestyle. Surprise, a classist society will keep you in the working class regardless of how educated you are.
