  • Honestly, this would be a really cool way to build Cobb houses, which are very environmentally friendly, have fantastic insulation, and are some of our oldest still standing structures, iirc. Good hat and boots (roof with overhang and foundation), 3d printed Cobb walls, and a lime coating, and I could see this really making housing costs a lot lower in certain communities.

    Biggest downside to Cobb from my research is just that electrical and plumbing typically needs to be running conduit on top of the wall, instead of inside the wall, if you want the option to upgrade or change it later.

  • Not really. She just refused to speak publicly about politics in general, except when it came to support for marginalized groups. So she had immense support for the gay and trans community, the black community, women, minorities, et cetera. You can infer her politics from that, but she often refused to speak about individual politicians, and did not throw her weight behind political campaigns. In a very big way, this has helped to push many towards tolerance and compassion, and the political figures that go with that.

    For instance, saying "I support gay marriage," effectively told people which party she voted for, but by refusing to name the party or the politician, she gave many of her fans a way to realize their own voting habits might be misaligned, without the immediate, unthinking backlash and reactionary results of saying "I am voting for the Democrat"

    From her very outspoken support of the groups she supported, it's almost impossible not to tell that she was left of center.

  • And she could have been worth so much fucking more. I'm not a celebrity worshipper, and God knows I'm not an apologist for the rich, but no. Dolly was absolutely an avatar for human compassion. She was human, and had faults, but she did more good in this world than she did wrong, and she did more good than anyone else I've ever seen in similar positions. She was my best friend's aunt, and even the inner circle family never really had anything negative to say about her, other than that she kept herself so busy worried about others that they worried about her.

  • When one of my best friends from childhood came out to me, he texted me after a few years of not having spoken (life stuff, not intentional on either side). This is basically how it went.

    Him: hey, man

    Me: [dead name]! I've missed you, what's up?

    Him: Actually, it's [new, male name] now. I'm transitioning.

  • It's not removing the means of survival. I said "removing the means of survive from meaningless work." In other words, to decouple the two concepts so that one may survive without having to rely on meaningless work.

  • I'll die on that hill. Lol. Best android to date, if it were updated for the modern age, I'd never consider any other form factor. That as a Linux phone would be absolutely a dream

  • As a leftist, UBI is a concept that both excites and scares me. It is a last ditch effort to save a consumer economy, and further removes people from labor organizing. With price hikes and unethical corporations and governments, a UBI could simply become a way to increase the price of every object and service, while also preventing the one method through which average people have ever genuinely impacted change: the union and strike. How do we unionize around ourself when we are removed from work? It's a scary concept.

    I love the idea of removing the means of survival from meaningless work, and I truly believe that is the direction we need to go if we wish to continue basing our economy off of consumerism and money (which, frankly, I don't think we need to do), but in order for it work and be anything other than an actual nightmarescape, UBI has to be coupled (in some concrete, irreversible way) with things like price controls, rent controls, and some way for people to functionally unionize as citizens outside of their respective employment.

    But all that said, we can't even get single payer healthcare in the US, so this is more of a "what they should do in Europe" situation, as here in the US the answer to "will we get a UBI" is "go fucking die in a hole, you disgusting poor. But not that hole. That's my hole."

    The T-Mobile G1 was incredible. I wish they would remake it for today. A slide out keyboard, and a little mouse ball. It was fucking fantastic.

    Blackberry 7230, I think. I looked up the timeline, and that looks like the right one, but the article says it was color. Mine was black and white. My mom got it for me because I loved to read, and could use it to read books outside.

    Blackberry 7100t was peak. First time I watched Internet porn was on that phone lol

    And at one point between the blackberry and my first android, my mom got me this phone with a built in MP3 player. It was so friggin thick, but it could hold so much music, and had an awesome camera. Around the same time, my buddy had a phone with a camera with a telescopic lense that looked more like a traditional camera than a phone.
