  • I have an “innovation award” trophy from my last job sitting on my office bookshelf.

The alleged innovation was rolling out git to track the DB schema backing mission-critical operations, in the year 2021.

(It was a government job btw.)

  • I’m happy to see the Chinese labs start competing on SOTA… but hot damn that price is a turnoff.

Anyone tried Kimi 2.7 Coding out in practice yet? Curious to know how it fares against Deepseek 4 and similar budget options.

  • Really good writing on this one (y’know, by rando substack standards).

  • Based on your description, it’s an abrasive cleaner. Don’t use it on enamel or anything else that can be stripped.

  • This is just normal in modern academia, tragically. The system is rotten to the core due to “publish or perish” and the players involved all know it.

The fact it got retracted is the surprising part.

  • Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Dunkin, etc.

Like, why? Life is too short.

  • You’re sweeping a lot under the rug with that first sentence: Society will adapt. Yeah sure, barring global catastrophe, it will. Doesn’t mean people won’t die and suffer in the process.

I’m making no claims about good vs. bad jobs here; people can self-actualize however they like in my book. Nor was I making any specific point about epidemiology of deaths of despair in the recent past, but I think that trend serves to illustrate the overall point.

  • Not really.

It’s all about the rate of change: neoliberal globalization has brought down wages across industries, so fewer good jobs are left, and the not-so-good ones barely keep up the same standard of living.

From a neutral historical perspective, some serious pearl-clutching about jobs is not ill-founded.

As you say, people in the past facing these circumstances didn’t all commit suicide. Yet some did it explicitly, some did it indirectly with alcohol or other vices, others just lived less fulfilling lives than they otherwise would have. Nonetheless, we are very much encouraging deaths of despair en masse with our current societal outlook.

  • Sure, but it’s much easier to get some form of RCE on public hosts in order to make practical use of the LPE.

  • Hmm, you’re right — that does seem funky.

Unfortunately I can only speak to the debian side of the house, not the raspbian. But I agree you should be seeing something more recent than that.

  • That’s what you’re supposed to be on for bookworm. Debian backports security fixes for things like Copy Fail to that kernel version.

  • Lemmy has many servers, with varying levels of uptime, load, and performance.

Sopuli tends to fare much better than lemmy.world.

  • I’ve never had that be an issue in practice. The NV DC drivers cover this need quite well IME: https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers

It’s also the best route I’ve found for setting up CUDA, so two birds, one stone.

  • I’ve been gaming on Debian stable for 6-7 years now; works great.

  • You can caramelize in ~15 min with a judicious pinch of baking soda. Common trick.

  • You’d want to tweak the ratios a bit for that — but yeah, I think it’s a great base for an enhanced gin rickey.

I’d probably aim for something like

    • 1.5 oz gin
    • .5 oz luxardo
    • .5 oz green chart
    • 1-2 oz lime

with 6-10 oz of club soda, as a very loose starting point.--
