  • Why I stopped angel investing after 15 years (and what I'm doing instead)

  • I find that I cannot even begin to relate to the author. If you have the kind of money to throw around that you can meaningfully be an angel investor for 20 - 30 companies, I don't see why the person wouldn't just throw the money in index funds and spend their time in a better way. Their third goal is to make more money, but you have to ask at a certain point why it's beneficial to do so - what does more money get you at that point?

    It seems like with that kind of money they could be free to do whatever they want with their time - investing it all in index funds and live off the interest.

    If they have meaningful contributions to make to founders and desire those relationships, they could meet founders and become a consultant for them, offering business advice or the typical advice they give now. This would enable them to learn and develop deeper relationships (their first two goals) without having to constantly sacrifice on those priorities to maximize their ROI (like having to spread their investments across 30 companies, making the relationships shallow and undermining their opportunities to learn and embed in the company).

    I can understand wanting to have deep and meaningful relationships, and wanting to learn and be involved in innovative development - those goals make sense to me. It's the third goal that has me puzzled.

    As far as I can tell the only thing that the angel investing is offering them is that it forces founders to be friends with them and involve them, the money is coercive that way - so if the author otherwise has no meaningful contributions to make, they can still force a social dynamic where they have authority with the founders and to be in their business (literally). Maybe their money, rather than their advice, is what is primarily worthwhile and opening doors to relationships and learning for them.

    But then I would say this is a poor way to achieve the goals of deeper relationships and learning: instead, use your economic privilege to get the kind of education that does make you a valuable person to work with, and then consult.

    I'm just shocked someone would feel making more money is a top priority once they have that much money - something strikes me as fundamentally wrong there.

  • sounds like lots of directions:

    • why are duplicates such a frequent problem, sounds like upstream solutions are needed there?
    • SSD would be faster read/write, yes (your data shouldn't be on a single hard-drive, it should be regularly backed up at least - make the HDD the backup and copy the main database to SSD?); you might even consider a cloud service like AWS RDS
    • for some use-cases, a noSQL database can be faster for reading - but it's contextual

  • honestly, right now I'm so grateful not be in significant or debilitating pain - I'm pretty much able bodied, I can cook and clean and do most of my daily activities pain-free.

    I'm a month away from a major surgery that will keep me bed-ridden for many weeks and in pain for even longer. I've just been through many major accidents and medical procedures, some of which kept me immobile, disabled, and in significant pain for extended periods of time (some for weeks to months).

    But right now, everything is sunshine and rainbows and I'm here for it 🌈🌞✨

  • Policies inform how the law and system works. The DOJ can change that policy, but since it is essentially under the control of the sitting president, that won't happen.

    I think you misunderstand the power dynamic, the president controls the military and if he starts to arrest SCOTUS justices, I don't think the SCOTUS rulings will matter any more, they won't have any way to enforce their rulings that will stand up to the de facto power the president has.

    The SCOTUS rulings are already being ignored by this administration on other decisions that were made by them, so you could say we're already past that.

  • Maybe this is sorta dumb, but meditation is a free way to feel good and spend time, and also a free method of stress relief and to reduce suffering.

    It's not free in terms of your time & energy, and it might cost some money to learn, but the best meditation manual I know of is free online, or at least it used to be - it looks like it was locked down on archive.org (where it used to be freely available), but you can still find it on Anna's Archive, and you can probably find it at your local library. Either way, you can learn to meditate for free, that's how I did it.

    Running is likewise relatively free (you do generally have to pay for running shoes, and athletic clothing can be expensive, but it's relatively cheap over the lifetime of those items, and it's cheaper than most other activities). A great and accessible way to feel good and stay healthy.

  • An employee was angry about an unfair policy and was being punished for not complying, and in his anger he threw a chair. This was before my time, but security had to escort the employee out of the building and he was fired on the spot. That story still circulates even though it's been over a decade.

    At another workplace some employees were caught having sex.

    At another workplace a manager and employees were running a drug operation out of a drive-thru.

    There were other things, but honestly humans are so predictable, they're usually:

    • fucking one another
    • threatening, fighting, or trying to kill one another
    • trying to get high or stay high
    • stealing, cheating, or otherwise trying to enrich themselves

    So a lot of the stories are of one form or another - employee who always came in extremely drunk and worked her shift drunk for years, only fired after some violent incidents and indecent exposure because of excessive drunkenness.

    One employee was homeless and sleeping on the roof of the store, he was caught climbing down one morning.

    Another guy was peddling drugs outside the store.

    Another employee was stealing stock from the store after hours and was fired after getting caught.

    Anyway - poverty is fun, y'all!

  • One way to do so is to take a photo with some unique words established here, along with maybe a newspaper and / or something in the background that proves your location is indeed NK (though you should be careful to not expose your identity doing this, I think it's just important the photo is authentic and establishes you are who you say you are).
