  • I’ve enjoyed messing with Perplexity and Duck AI.

  • That book has been on my list for too long!

  • See libs!? We’re just putting the CO2 back where it belongs! Check and mate climate fear mongers! /s

  • I guess for me it’s all just a kind of sane-washing. I think the term far right is a nice way of saying “not quite full-on fascist.” The “far right” is basically in charge of the conservative party in the US. To the extent that a large part of the “progressive” party could be classified as “the right” (and many of them classified themselves that way not that long ago!). Calling something “far-“ anything denotes fringe beliefs, and I think the window has shifted far enough on the right that anything short of folks who knowingly, actively, and proudly fly fascist flags are just “the right.” The bulk of the party now openly champions ideas that were considered fringe not very long ago.

  • Can we just stop calling it the “far right?” By now, unless they’re actually wearing hoods or dressing in 1940s Hugo Boss, they’re just “the right.” That’s where we are.

  • I recently learned that one of the older men in my family does, in fact, have and use a poop knife.

  • I would also add that the work you “put into” this is mainly in how you vote. We’re seeing the results of the “line must go up” culture in various parts of the world right now - most notably in the US. My biggest fear is that the global economy will need another Great Depression, probably right around the time I’m getting ready to retire, to realize that there is more to company stewardship that making rich people richer.

  • For most people, assuming they have disposable income, this is probably the right answer. One of the cornerstones of these forums is that trying to time the market is more often than not a fool’s errand unless you have inside information. Secondly, they rely on a long term view of investing. If you’re planning on retiring in 5 years, they’re a good start, but you’ll probably need more than they can offer. If retirement is still 10-20 years off, they can be very helpful in getting you pointed in the right direction. If you’re still in your 20s, they’ll have you set. I’ve often seen it said in these groups that if their strategies don’t work over 30-40 years, the economy probably has much bigger problems (like impending collapse)!

  • Usually some TV show while I scroll the last 6 hours of Lenny and eat breakfast. Until it was recently cancelled, the TV show was After Midnight. Now I have a backlog of over 400 Jeopardy shows saved off on Tablo. That or catching up on Taskmaster.

  • But Damone said side 1 of Led Zeppelin IV should be played “whenever possible!” /s

  • Low key amazing woman.

  • That movie still gives me the feels. At the end when they’re riding the scooter and make the funny faces at the camera. It’s perfect, and she was amazing in that role.

  • So many excellent suggestions, I have to ask. Where do y’all find the time to listen to all of this!?

  • Pretty sure this program will be shitcanned by the Big Beautiful Bill (to make everywhere Mississippi).

  • Strangely, I think we all do, now.

  • Agreed. Like so many things, I think law enforcement can help rein in the stock market. If there were a way to move the SEC under maybe the Fed(?) and require full funding of the agency as the cost of doing business on any stock market in the US (with similar institutions in other countries). Probably a flawed idea, but I think the goal is sensible: remove the SEC from political ambitions and whims and make the market directly fund its regulatory adherence.

Also more people need to suffer severe prison sentences for financial shenanigans. We also need to go back to separate deposit and investment banks.

  • If I’m not mistaken, the US has the beginnings of this in place already in the form of taxes on short-term investments. I’m by no means a tax expert, but this could be a starting point, maybe.

  • Awhile back I read a trilogy of books called “The Iron Harvest.” Going in, I didn’t really buy the premise, but book 1 was on sale for either free or around a dollar. The premise was a near future where privacy ceased to exist. People had figured out how to make it so people could experience any past event through the eyes as a person who was there. They couldn’t change anything, but they could be in the moment as the person participating in it. I wound buying all three books.

In the past 5 or so years, I’m believing the premise more and more. What little privacy we still have will continue to be eroded away.

  • Something I haven’t seen mentioned is an attic fan. They’re mounted on the ceiling of your highest floor. These used to be common before AC became so widespread. Basically, you open your windows, and the fan sucks air in through the windows, through the house and up into the attic, where an exhaust fan can push it out.
