  • My parents helped through college, and then I went out on my own. The help was still available, though. In my early 30’s, I moved back in with them because I had taken a job in the town where they lived. It was supposed to be temporary, but they saw that my financial situation needed them to step in, so they offered to let me stay and pay them a small rent (basically to cover bills and food). That was a huge help! 2-years later and I was mostly debt free (only student loans and a small car loan left), and taking a new job further away from them.

    Long story short, I think parents should help when they can, and if the situation warrants it. There’s something to be said for letting your kids fail on their own. They learn more than you can teach them that way. But, while it’s good to help them, it’s also important that they recognize the help they’ve received. Knowing that outside help got them where they are is a Good Thing. It helps make them more empathetic to others who maybe don’t have the same support system.

    ETA: the student loans were very low interest rate, back when that was a thing.

    It happens, but like any relationship, you have to run in similar circles in order to meet before any relationship can form.

    Famous people tend to have somewhat closed circles around them because fans can be crazy.

  • Trash is a great place to start. There was another guy I found helpful, too. Dr Frankenstein, I think? Also, I can't remember where I found the swag write-up I used for my current setup, but swag/dockerproxy are awesome. No open ports on the router, and automatic subdomain/SSL setup w/ Cloudlfare by adding 1 label to the compose file.

    Only 2 notes I have about Trash guides are:

    1. Include some kind of ingest directory for qbittorrent. Helpful when you want to d/l a torrent that's not managed by one of the arrs. Just save it there and thy will be done!
    2. Pay close attention to the quality settings. Most don't have a fallback quality. So if you say you want 4k for movies, it will often fail to find something, especially if it's older, and you have to go see why, change the quality to 1080, etc. Instead, use the quality guide to understand how it works, and set up what you want with appropriate fallback. For example, I prefer to get 720p for TV. Especially w/ long running shows they can take up A LOT of space, even at 1080! BUT sometimes 720 just isn't available. 1080 is usually the first thing that comes out, so I add 1080 as second choice. For older shows, I add DVD quality as third choice, HDTV next, and 480p last (probably have those last two backwards). This way, it will pretty much always get something decent, and if the quality I want is ever released, I have it configured to continually search. Looking over the Trash guides definitely helped me dial this in, but I'm not using the stock version of any of their presets.

    One thing I need to figure out is identifying shows that have hearing disabled tracks as their default/only. I've been watching Taskmaster, and lots of the episodes in more recent seasons have the descriptive voice-over that's annoying to me since I don't need it.

    What is your experience with your work's insurance

  • It’s an incentive US employers offer in lieu of additional pay or employee rights. One that the employee still has to pay for. When nearing middle age, It’s just generally cheaper than going without. It relies on healthy young people, who mostly don’t really need it beyond regular cleanings/check-ups, signing up to help cover the costs of older workers.

  • Access to affordable healthcare is mostly dependent on decent employment. Many people who are employed, many with more than one job, don’t get health insurance. If you don’t have healthcare, it’s simply not affordable unless you’re quite wealthy. I’ve seen hospital bills that listed aspirin at $250 apiece.

    Also, I kind of overdid it. Analogies really just show synonymous relationships. That they can help someone understand a relationship is superfluous.
