  • If you've not got one, I would highly recommend getting an air quality meter.

    I had this issue last night, awake randomly at 2-3am. When I checked, the air quality was terrible. (It's bespoke scale put it at 10 out of 100) after opening a window and letting it improve, I happily drifted back off.

    It turned out I didn't wake up randomly, I was dragged awake from a light sleep due to the air quality plummeting. It won't apply to everyone, but it's worth checking if it's a common problem.

    (For reference, 10% air was CO2 of 2360ppm, and VOCs at 5000ppm with 80% humidity. Fresh air is CO2<500, VOCs<100)

  • LLMs can't become AGIs. They have no ability to actually reason. What they can do is use predigested reasoning to fake it. It's particularly obvious with certain classes of proble., when they fall down. I think the fact it fakes so well tells us more about human intelligence than AI.

    That being said, LLMs will likely be a critical part of a future AGI. Right now, they are a lobotomised speech centre. Different groups are already starting to tie them to other forms of AI. If we can crack building a reasoning engine, then a full AGI is possible. An LLM might even form its internal communication method, akin to our internal monologue.

  • Interestingly, most natural radioactive material in nature comes from uranium. Uranium is also a heavy metal, and is quite toxic in its own right.

    It's likely that it's avoided due to heavy metal poisoning rather than radiation.

  • The dream router is an excellent base to build upon. It provides all the normal functions (ethernet, wifi, router etc) as well as hosting the control software.

    Unifi's real power is when you expand it. The access points make extending WiFi coverage easy. You dont even need a wired link. It will link over WiFi, either as a primary or as a fall back. The flex mini is also quite handy. It's a little poe powered switch. I have a couple tucked away providing extra ports around the house.

    With my setup, I have detailed monitoring and control down to the port or wifi device. I can monitor and control things in detail, or get a high level view of my network.

  • While expensive, UniFi hardware is just a huge step beyond the rest of the consumer market.

    I've had literally 10x the range (5x vs 50m), in congested environments, compared to 'gaming' hardware. I actually did a side by side to test. I was shocked at the difference.

    The bridging function is also a life saver. 2 LR units can get a reliable signal between each other, at ridiculous ranges.

  • I was taught to adjust my speed until the distance is safe. Most people eventually either overtake, or get the hint and back off.

    Don't break check though! It can cause people to panic and swerve, causing an accident.

  • Unfortunately, the methods of detecting AI generated text and training AI text generaters is basically identical. Any reliable method of detecting AI can therefore be used to improve its performance.

    You can, at least, detect low grade attempts to use it. The default output has distinctive patterns. These can be detected. The problem is 2 fold. Firstly, some people write in the same way (the LLM is copying the amalgam, and they write close to that). Secondly, it's fairly trivial to ask the LLM to change its writing style.

    No matter your method, you need to accept a high rate of both false positives and negatives.

  • Scientists are not good at keeping secrets, particularly not of this level. Also, the ISS is remarkably public. It would be obvious they were hiding something, at the very least.

    Would I expect to spend some time "volunteering" in a research lab, more than likely. I doubt it would get to dissection level. The risk/cost would be low enough that I would take it.

  • The International Space Station. The sheer confusion value would be amazing, particularly if I stayed quiet about how it happened ("I went to bed, then woke up floating here. I've no clue how it happened").

    I would get to cause a major incident of complete chaos, with little to no harm. I would get to experience space and weightlessness. I would also get a near guaranteed lift home (eventually). There's also almost no way it could be kept quiet, so I get to be a minor celebrity for a while.

    As far as I can tell, it would make the disruption of covid look like a minor market blip. And that's without looking into how the various chain reactions would play off and amplify each other on the global stage.

  • There's a difference between pumping the brakes and throwing a grenade into the fuel tank. A large scale economic collapse would be devastating. The world economy is so interdependent now that even minor disruptions cause problems.

    I'm all for pumping the brakes, but we either need to stop gracefully, or have an alternative to jump to.

  • In our current economic model, any deflation creates a perverse incentive to not spend. It is extremely bad for the economy, and all of us reliant on it. The rich are one of the few groups that come out ahead (relatively).

    Like it or not, we are all stuck on that merry go round. Until we find a graceful way off, it's in no-one's interest to jam it up.
