  • I’ve seen the reports. I highly doubt any of the arm chair statisticians (who have never taken a day of mathematical or proof-level stats) have a clue what they are talking about. The polls’ histories and lean are factored into 538’s averages. They are not new to this.

And how many polls are left leaning? The graph posted a couple of days ago on midwest claims 35% are right leaning, and a correlation with the drop in support for Harris. What it doesn’t say is the proportion of democratic polls, and there really isn’t a correlation over the length of history shown.

Hard to make informed decisions when half the information is hidden. (But arm chair statisticians don’t recognize the issue do they?)

  • Iranian cyber actors’ use of brute force and other techniques to compromise organizations across multiple critical infrastructure sectors, including the healthcare and public health (HPH), government, information technology, engineering, and energy sectors.

It seems they’ve abstracted the term “critical infrastructure” to refer to the organizations that perform critical functions within society, not necessarily the networks running nuclear power plants.

But also, commercial entities don’t exactly have access to NSA encryptors.. so your alternative is to disconnect everything. And that’s not feasible.

  • Okay, which one is missing?

  • Great, but that’s not what republicans mean when they say “extremist liberal.” Instead they have coopted the term “extremist” so it no longer means anything, except what they want it to, when they want it to.

That’s what extremists do, gaslight, obstruct and project. It’s all 101 level stuff.

  • Well, that obviously calls for deprogramming. All the commercials this month inform me you are a radical socialist trying to feed children who don’t deserve it. I think the correct answer is to throw them in labor camps instead so they can earn bread and water. Serves them right for being born poor.

  • I don’t know about outer coatings, but I always wondered if lapping film would work on glass lenses. Think super fine sandpaper for fiber optic cables.

  • When Mike Pence was rushed to a secure location on Jan. 6, an aide alerted Donald Trump in the hope that he would take action to ensure Pence’s safety. Instead, according to grand jury testimony, Trump looked at the aide and said only, “So what?”

I don’t know if this will hold up in court, but Trump is a dick.

  • So people don’t punch it.

  • I’m on lemmy, with you….

  • I’m not..

  • If you’re into apple (with the watch) give apple fitness a shot.

Peloton has a standalone app if you don’t mind a non-data experience (you can still wear a hrm/watch of course, but no feedback about exertion in the peloton app.)

Next option is some sort of trainer. You can either bolt a real bike to one, or use a stationary bike that fills the role. A trainer can connects via ANT/BLE to an app. Just google “bike trainers”. With this comes lots of options for apps to track training. E.g. wahoo, zwift, etc.

    Best of luck.

  • I just added a bunch of classical to a playlist and then removed the occasional piece I found distracting. I still use that playlist when I need to focus.

  • win + ; for some fun ascii art

  • Which search engines give results without an AI generated response?

  • Look up running belts.

  • But cables wear out.

  • Don’t call me sir, I work for a living.

The difference between officers and enlisted (even enlisted “officers”) is well understood in the public domain. Just google the term “military officer”. You won’t find a reference to NCOs.

    From the AI:

Here are some things to know about military officers: Pay grades Officer pay grades range from O-1 to O-10.

    Army’s top-level page on “officers”: https://www.goarmy.com/careers-and-jobs/find-your-path/army-officers

    From the wiki:

Broadly speaking, "officer" means a commissioned officer, a non-commissioned officer (NCO), or a warrant officer. However, absent contextual qualification, the term typically refers only to a force's commissioned officers, the more senior members who derive their authority from a commission from the head of state.

This just takes very little research for anyone writing an article on the subject. No, I don’t expect the laymen to automatically know the difference between an NCO and a commissioned officer, but we are talking about a journalist here. I suppose if you want to lower your standards for journalism, fine.

  • The term officer, alone, as it stands in the headline, is reserved for commissioned officers. No one in the military would assume that headline was referring to an NCO.
