  • I'm a different person. It appeared to me that you were lumping in all German citizens with Nazis which is why I made the post.

    I'm not defending Nazi supporters, even in the earliest stages. They j knowingly joined with the antisemites to try and push their own agendas. History tells us how that worked out.

    Now, you might be able to make the case that early Nazi party members, before the rise of power, weren't 100% antisemitic, they absolutely knew they were getting into bed with antisemites.

    After the rise in power started, Jewish sympathisers were purged from the party. Anyone in or supporting Nazis (which was a large portion of the population) knew what they were supporting.

    I'd just caution painting too broadly. That wasn't all German citizens that supported the Nazi movement. It was also a brutal regime that stomped out detractors. German media of the era was highly controlled. It'd paint a false picture of the amount of support. True dissent was a dangerous position to publicly take.

    It should also be noted that there are groups you can control your membership of (political parties, religions) and groups you are forced into (ethnicity, sexuality). The group you choose to join speaks far more about how terrible or good you are. The worst groups and people are those that attack people based on groups they are forced into, bigots and fascists.

  • Virtue signaling is an important act for a minority party. It lets the base know what you stand for and what your opponents stand against. This is something with broad public appeal yet low congressional support (because politicians like monies). It's something you can hit your opponents with and, with a snowball's chance, you might actually make progress in passing.

    "I want to take money out of politics, my opponent is captured by rich billionaires. They don't serve you, they serve the billionaires" It's an ad that writes itself.

    This is something dems should be doing, especially since the last election was them running away from policy and instead doubling down on how much their policy isn't different from the average republican's. We saw how that turned out.

  • They've already done a trial run of that. Look up the Joe Arpaio death camps. ICE already has detention centers and the Trump admin is trying to figure out how to ensure states have enough chemicals to continue executions.

    Trumpers are also already calling every undocumented worker a violent criminal/rapist/pedophile/etc. We are honestly at a 1 + 1 = 2 for the admin. The real only hope is that this trump admin ends up backstabbing each other like the last one did and it falls apart into total dysfunction.

  • It could be that, it's more likely that this never passes/or is ratified and is effectively a Benghazi or hunter Biden trope that plays well on Fox News.

    My bigger fear is that Trump just runs for a 3rd term anyways because who'd stop him? The supreme Court will vote 6:3 that their hands are tied any they can't keep him off the ballot. And if he's elected, they'll rule 6:3 that "well, the Constitution says we can't do this, but it'd go against the will of the people and would be hard to unwind so we won't do anything"

  • Yeah, the problem (imo) isn't lossy v lossless. It's that the supported codecs are part of the Bluetooth standard and they were developed in like the 90s.

    There are far better codecs out there and we can't use them without incompatible extensions on Bluetooth.

  • The amount of power AI and Crypto require is orders of magnitude the amount of power required by pretty much any regular application. The company I work at uses somewhere around 2000 CPU cores worth of compute at AWS (and we have ~100 microservices. We are a fairly complex org that way).

    Generally speaking, an 80CPU core system takes up ~200W worth of power. That means my companies entire fleet operating eats about 5kW of power when running full bore (it isn't doing that all the time). My company is not a small company.

    Compare that to what a single nvidia A100 eats up. Those GPUs take up to 400W of power. When doing AI/crypto stuff you are running them as hard as possible (meaning you are eating the full 400W). That means just 12 AI or crypto apps will eat all the same amount of power that my company with 100 different applications eats while running full bore. Now imagine that with the model training of someone like chatgpt which can eat pretty much as many GPUs as you can throw at it.

    To put all of this in perspective. 5kW is roughly what a minisplit system will consume.

    Frankly, I'm way more concerned about my companies travel budget in terms of CO2 emissions than I am our datacenter usage.
