    Ok, this makes sense for why first isn't redundant, I wasn't thinking about the possibility of ties.

    The outcome is very clear to anyone who has ever played games before, you’re just being very pedantic for pedantic sake.

    No it's legit confusing. Maybe you're just better at games but I honestly would not understand a game explained that way.

  • That doesn't seem right, because it would be totally equivalent to "the one who arrives with the most food". You could also interpret the sentence to mean [first AND most], and at least with that interpretation saying "first" has significance and isn't redundant, even though most outcomes have no valid winner. Ultimately I think /u/regdog@lemmy.world is right and it is totally unclear how to determine the outcome.

    Well yeah, obviously, but why would someone give you the opportunity if being around you makes them uncomfortable and threatened? It works the other way around too; I wouldn't want to spend time with someone if it seems like doing so might be making them feel afraid, in that case I'm just going to stay away from them.

  • Of course it doesn't feel great to think that people are uncomfortable and threatened just being aware that you are a single man who exists in the same environment, but if that's how it's gotta be, how do you successfully communicate that you are not a threat?

  • It seems like this type of app could very easily do everything locally without connecting to a server at all and it's pretty insane that they instead choose the tradeoff of the obvious privacy nightmare and misuse of sensitive data for whatever small advantages like being able to sync between different devices or whatever.

    'generic' seems to be describing a category of header files that are especially important for some reason, and isn't being used as a pejorative to describe the rejected code.

  • Now, I would hope there's no garbage inside the RISC-V parts, but that's your choice. But things in generic headers do not get polluted by crazy stuff.

    So can anyone explain this? What are header files in this context and why are unnecessary functions especially problematic for them? Why would it not be up to Linus or not his concern what is included in the "RISC-V parts"? I guess this is all code for a Linux kernel that is built on top of RISC-V which I think is an assembly language, and not a modification to RISC-V itself?

    I get the logic about make_u32_from_two_u16() being bad at least.

  • This does seem in poor taste by Polymarket, it looks like things to bet on are suggested by users but actually put on the site by the company itself. They should probably have a rule against bets that incentivize breaking the law this directly.

  • To be fair, in the quoted passage the author is explicitly not referring to Bolt, but asking for explanations of specific, probably small scope issues from non-agentic AI tools.

    Personally even while in school for CS I spent a large number of hours staring at a screen being totally unsure how to proceed to figure out what I didn't understand, most of it trivial details, or making random edits and hoping it would fix something. I'm sure there are advantages to learning by stumbling around, but I really don't think it's the ideal way unless you're already a very methodically curious person.

    The temptation to jump directly to asking the AI to just do everything for you without yourself understanding it is definitely going to be a stumbling block for people learning, and I'm not sure if there's a good way around that one, but otoh something available 24/7 that can mostly accurately answer beginner questions in context and as you have worded them seems like it would be crazy helpful, so many times I just wasn't able to progress until I could get some attention from someone.

  • You get a pet, which is supposed to be a companion and basically part of your family, and you don’t mind them being torn to shreds?

    This is a fair way to feel about it, but if the question is only what is done with a body after it has been euthanized it seems more like a cultural consideration than an ethical one. Like there are cultures with strong feelings about treatment of human corpses to the point where organ donation is taboo, but that doesn't mean being ok with family members being organ donors is some awful thing.

    There's a larger question about how pets and other animals are treated, and the thought of someone euthanizing a healthy pet for petty reasons is really disturbing (like stories you sometimes hear about this being done as a way to emotionally abuse someone), but that isn't exactly the fault of the zoo or its practices.

  • I have had problems with the drain plumbing downstream of my kitchen sink, because the heat causes the pipes to expand slightly and be longer. My theory is there is some loose wiring in the walls, and your drain pipes press on the loose wiring until they cool down again.
