  • If everyone switches to disparately hosted Discord alternatives, maybe they will think twice about passing such laws because they will be impractical to enforce. I think the biggest reason they are getting passed now rather than ten years ago is because it has become somewhat technically feasible with the level of centralization the internet has devolved into, they can actually expect that people will put up with it rather than just leaving the platforms that comply.

  • In a financial negotiation, avoid saying a number first, even if it seems like you're being rude, just say stuff like "what's your budget" instead. This trick sounds really stupid but somehow it is extremely effective.

  • If your focus is LLMs, get a 3090 gpu. Vram is the most important thing here because it determines what models you can load and run at a decent speed, and having 24Gb will let you run the mid range models that specifically target this amount of memory because of this being a very standard amount to have for hobbyists. These models are viable for coding, the smaller ones are less so. Looking at prices it seems like you can get this card for 1-2k depending on if you go used or refurbished. I don't know if better price options are going to be available soon but with the ram shortage and huge general demand it kind of doesn't seem like it.

    If you want to focus on image or video generation instead, I understand that there are advantages to going with newer generation cards because certain features and speed is more of a factor than just vram but I know less about this.

  • Talking about low level compilers seems like moving the goalposts, since they are way more well defined and vetted than the mass of software libraries and copy pasted StackOverflow functions a large segment of programming has been done with.

  • The fact they are being shown to users is jank (it's a popup within the Mumble gui), the fact that the hosters ran into this problem is evidence that hosting Mumble is a big challenge because I am convinced they generally know what they are doing. The comparison here is Discord, for which neither the people running a channel or its users have problems like that.

  • The author's point is that people already don't understand what the programs they write do, because of all the layered abstraction. That's still true whether or not you want to object to the semantics of calling the use of LLMs an abstraction layer.

  • Mumble still works but from what I can tell its software ecosystem seems to be decaying due to bots etc. not being updated and breaking changes in their dependencies, people can still get them to work if they really know what they're doing but it's difficult. It also has some quirks that make it confusing for people to use, I'm in a mumble server and any time anyone new joins someone has to explain to them that they need to go through the menus to "register" in order to join the main channel, even though this registration is entirely within the application and doesn't require email authentication or anything. There's also frequently SSL warnings and things like that.

  • If they're doing it that way then it's dumb for these to be questions about your life because the point of that is to make it things that people will definitely be able to remember, but realistically you're only going to remember the answer in general, not necessarily the specific wording or how the answer was formatted.

  • There is normally a large spread between retail and used price of consumer goods, especially if it's not a hot commodity with a big resale market. The explanation in the comic is at least plausible; if someone got something as a gift, but they want cash instead, their only option could be to sell it at a significant discount. Same goes if they bought it themselves at some point but need to come up with money quickly.

  • That's fair. I think if I wanted a larger screen I'd look into big monitors and some kind of expansion of my homelab setup to display things to it, but I can see why people might want a dedicated device with less setup required, even one where the setup is still pretty confusing.

    I looked up some statistics and it seems, depressingly, that consumers are in fact buying more televisions and it's projected to increase, so I guess I have to concede the point that what they are doing is successful despite all reason.

  • You can choose not to have a TV. I only know about the current state of smart TVs because of sometimes being around the ones other people have, I would never buy one myself, there's no need. Any media you want to see can be viewed in other ways.

  • I don't buy it, they would be better at whatever nefarious crap if they didn't take a full second to navigate between menu options, or had a UI designed by someone competent. Even people who have subscriptions to the services the TV is a gateway to have a hard time figuring out how to use them. These things aren't even good at exploitation, they are decaying technology.
