  • Yep. nothing yet.

  • Thanks!

Though I appear to be having trouble having people follow me from other servers. I don't see you in my followers list, and when I tried following a test account on another server, I didn't see their posts. Not sure what's going on. Does it just take a while for the servers to sync?

Do you see any of my posts?

  • Yeah, but that's the thing. You can only search if you know the exact username of the user on the other server. But you can't find usernames on other servers without creating an account there.

I wish it was more like Lemmy where you can browse other instances without an account at that instance.

  • That makes sense. It is a bit ironic. Like everyone wants to go back to old Instagram where you just keep up with friends, but I think we've all grown accustomed to our feeds and our friends don't have enough cute cats and dogs to accommodate our interests.

  • Yeah, give eBay a shot. A lot of sellers are mom and pop shops and even offer free shipping.

Amazon somehow managed to needle their way into people's minds as the only option, but there are others out there.

The only true monopoly they have is in same day/next day shipping which I'm guessing you don't qualify for anyway.

  • How do you find someone on Instagram if you are not an Instagram user?

How do you find something on Mazda Forum if you are on Reddit?

How you find something on AVForums if you are on AVS Forum?

If you're trying to promote federation, this isn't the way to go about it.

  • you take the post/user’s original URL,

Ok, but if I don't have an account on their instance, how do I even find their URL?

  • Right, but hashtags only show posts on my instance which at the moment is just me.

  • Ok, so I spent the weekend getting my own Pixelfed instance working for my friends who want off Instagram.

My big question, is how do you discover new content?

Sure you can follow people on other instances, but how do you find them in the first place?

Also, basically all of the content I’ve been able to find so far has been artsy photos of fences and beaches and whatnot. It’s pretty and all, but there’s not much of humanity in my feed.

  • Are your shipping costs higher because you’re rural?

I ask because a lot of people assume going off Amazon will be pricier, but I’ve often found that Amazon prices are inflated mask the price of shipping.

  • Super cool tech, but I wonder why they chose an additive process for a flat outcome.

  • Yup! SN 528128 Got it off eBay. Apparently the previous owner passed away and his daughter sold it. Paid $1300 for it. It's the dumbest thing I've ever spent that much money on and I regret nothing.

It had some issues when I got it doing division. It tended to jam up turning in reverse. But I was able take it apart to get it working. One of the metal tabs wasn't bent quite enough. Makes sense since these thing were all hand assembled and tuned.

I looked up the serial number on curtamania, and saw some checkins from various previous owners. It was pretty wild that someone even uploaded a photo. Not of a Curta calculator, but my Curta calculator.

  • I would scroll a bit after someone linked me a video. Content was fun, but after like 3 minutes, I could feel something wrong in my brain. Like just the nonstop influx of content with no breaks. You might think one video was faked, but you didn't have enough time to contemplate it before another shows up in its place.

I have some friends who spend hours on it. I can't imagine deciding to participate in that for so long.

  • Maybe if there were like 2 employees in the store, people would feel less comfortable stealing shit.

The Joann fabric near us has these speakers that will say something like "ask an associate if you need anything" when you walk near them. They put them near the expensive shit.

Clearly, it's an attempt to alert staff when someone is walking near the expensive stuff, but like...the store has 2 employees and when they're not checking people out, they're trying desperately to keep up with the boxes of unloaded freight clogging up the aisles.

Nobody is watching you steal stuff.
