  • A friend of mine dedicated his life to birds and wildlife. He spent six months in Argentina weighing and banding penguins, worked to design autonomous buoys that track ocean data, and his personal birdwatching species count was over, 10k.

He passed away suddenly last March at the age of 33. He just got married the month before.

As tragic as his death was (especially for his widow), part of me thinks that there was some mercy in him dying so young rather than potentially living a long life of watching everything he cared about and worked to save get destroyed.

  • The old joke “what was the tallest mountain before Mt. Everest was discovered?”

    “Mt. Everest”

    Apple’s photo management software: Photos

  • I am sexually attracted to covered breasts. Your argument is invalid.

  • Here’s a tip. If you’re in a group, record people reacting to the fireworks, not the fireworks themselves.

  • On the mac, there was Toast (it burns), and Nero had an ad that said that they "Eat Toast for Breakfast."

What a great era for software branding.

  • Got a Minimal Phone for a similar reason.

  • I mean, I buy stuff off eBay a lot, and it's often from small mom-and-pop shops. I needed new ribbon for my typewriter recently and ended up getting it from a store that just sells ink ribbons. They have an off-eBay presence too.

  • Used OKCupid from ~2008 to 2016. Maybe 10 or so 1-2 month relationships in that time. Plenty of first dates. Then met my wife. Married in '23.

I've heard it's a fucking nightmare now though. OKCupid used to be all about the profiles and questions, but soon after we stopped using it, it turned into a Tinder clone with just photos. Add in a healthy dose of AI, and I'm sure it's a very unpleasant time.

  • Retract the lead in a mechanical pencil and slide it over the pin to bend it back.

  • Is that the real smile? I know he was smiling, but I've seen other versions where it's not nearly this pronounced. Did someone tweak it?

  • Your local thrift stores will have dozens of Christmas compilation albums for like $3 each.

  • I’m a year into a 5 year purchase with name cheap. Their certs last a year by default.

  • I guess my certs expired. Here's the comic:

Edit: Updated my certs. Really thought they'd send me a reminder or something...

  • For the rest, start with their commit message

Heh, that's another can of worms. The project is in a "get a bunch of stuff quickly" mode at the moment, and he's taken to treating main like his personal codebase. Pushing to main, no comments. Even our Linear tasks he just marks as "complete" with no comments or context.

But yeah, I think the rest of your advice would work well if he was a bit more of a team player.

  • Haven't read the article, but can anyone with more software experience let me know how you're supposed to collaborate with someone who uses AI to code? I'm working with a vibe coder for the first time. As far as I can tell, his code is all great, but the dude checks in like 3,000 lines at a time. How am I supposed to have any understanding of a codebase that grows and changes that quickly?
