  • Never. For the 10 year I did go to the bar in town where I was certain everyone I was interested in catching up with would be.

    After that - pretty much moved on from those people and that town completely.

  • It’s true - but more people like us, who initially trusted what we were taught, are finding out the truth all the time.

    And I see voices that have been much more marginalized than me “believe in the promise” after being much more negatively affected by the truth than me.

    If they still believe in it, how can my barely marginalized ass give up on it? That’s essentially giving up on their struggle and their determination. I cannot turn my back on the sons and daughters of enslaved, LGBTQ+, indigenous and on and on folks.

  • It’s quite common for folks to say they believe in “the promise of America” with the failure to achieve said promise left as an exercise for the reader.

    Despite all the bullshit happening now, I still believe the promise is worth fighting for and I’m personally not ready to give up on it.

  • Definitely true. I’ve heard the same and it’s another one of the reasons I want to appreciate it.

    A other example of this that’s frequently cited and happened in my own life time which makes it easy to see first hand and understand is The Matrix/bullet-time.

    These movies are so well regarded and spoken so highly of (ok - maybe not Blade Runner); their champions are so passionate and enthusiastic, every time I hear folks go off on how great they are I get, once again, excited to watch them. But every time I try, I just can’t get into them. 2001 is a particular slog with its ~30 minute intro of no dialogue. It almost inevitably puts me to sleep before even the first word is spoken.

    I hate that they’re so well regarded and I really want to enjoy them but I just can’t get into them.
