  • Ok so if I'm reading this correctly: They migrated from an OS and MySQL version receiving no updates since at least 2 years to MySQL 8.0 which will stop getting updates in 4 days. Also every service is running without any containerization and there is a single database for everything... and it all runs on a single host and I didn't read one word about a backup strategy or disk encryption. Also not a single word about infrastructure as code like ansible so that you can reliably recreate the system... and The whole stuff is hosted in Germany for a Turkish software company - sounds like very good latency.

My personal conclusion: This system WILL fail and the guy who designed it is stuck somewhere 10-20 years in the past.

  • Stop complaining and send patches instead.

  • 23 years after the first x64 CPU rolled off the assembly lines, Linux is still supporting it.

  • That's still a 5W difference.

I have other devices like a TV that require 1-2W when they are in standby/shut off.

OP's number is way to low. The power supplys conversion loss itself will already be a few watts.

  • Ok so I don't quite understand why self hosting makes the situation better:

Turns out once you've played enough the database on the host just gets too big and chokes out the CPU threads since it can't use more than 2 cores

Ok so you will have the same problem when hosting it on a dedicated server...

Wife is hosting and pulling 10 fps with a Nvidia 3070TI

I have an old HP SFF i5 16GB RAM with an SSD

Are you telling me that the old HP SFF has more performance than your wife's PC?

I also don't quite understand what using a dedicated server has to do with FPS because server calculations should usually not impact this expect when the game's code is utter garbage and it performs server calculations on the rendering thread...

I used to run an old gaming computer as a home server and it felt like $30 a month in electricity.

Let's assume that server somehow requires 1kWh per day (which is quite a lot). That would be around 30ct per day here in Europe which is like $10 a month. So not sure if your server was constantly running at 200W or your power plugs are coated with gold...

  • That's what you see further to the back by the wall (50€ used, Fritz!Box 7510). Unfortunately, it only comes with one (1!!!!!) singular LAN port, so I had to buy a switch for 5 LAN ports in total (another 12€) which is sufficient for all the devices we use at home.

7510 is an extremely bad router, it doesn't even have 5Ghz WiFi which is like standard for 10 years now. The router is your core access to the internet. Saving money in this place is definitely the wrong choice. You could have gotten a used 7520/7530 (has 4x LAN and proper 5 GhZ WiFi) for like 10€ more and wouldn't require the 12€ switch...

You should maybe do more research before doing stuff in the future...

The current proposal is not specific enough: With your proposal every post effectively requires an artist signature. There will always be some valid reason why there is none. Also who should check/enforce this? The single non-existing mod? xD

Keep it simpler and make a rule that says: Content created by somebody else requires attribution.

Attribution could be an artist signature in the comic, the name of the artist in the description or a link to the original source in a comment.

  • Correct. YOUR* goverment is buying it.

    * only affects less than 5% of world population

  • Peaceful protests are impotent unless backed by a genuine threat of violence

Eastern europe (exluding Romania) would like to have a word.

  • Oh yeah let's shot the scorpion, snake, spider, whatever with a gun because shovels or something handy that everyone has at home and doesn't destroy half the house when you try to kill the creature is overrated.

  • These currently include the Intel Core Ultra processors, which have been quite popular among gamers over the past year or so.

The person who wrote this article has exactly ZERO idea about the current market situation and is probably working for userbenchmarks.

I just checked some CPU sales data from retailers here in EU and AMD has currently >90% market share.

    So nobody really cares...

  • Cool, cool.

Now tell me exactly HOW this will be done? Do I have to pay them $10 to do this?

  • So does Motorola...

  • How I imagine the decision:

Should we maybe port it to Fairphone? The phone most of our users probably like?

Nah let's do Motorola instead - you know the company were you have to spin a dice to determine if your device can unlock the bootloader or not...
