  • Translating documentation

    And translations for the application itself in some cases, so that it can be ran and used in different languages. Human contributions to the language files of the application is what my project needs more than anything else, and if you do speak a non-English language fluently, I'd be very grateful! Here's how I've worded it for my project:

    If you would like your language to be supported, please create a new pull request, or a new issue with your language file, using an existing language file as a template.

  • It's a PHP container On the front end I'm using Bootstrap and theming it with Catppuccin. The data for the home energy charts are populated from the Home Assistant API. They're drawn with chart.js. The server stats are pulled from PHP shell_exec commands, and drawn with Bootstrap progress bars. The temperature card also takes data from the Home Assistant API, which also has an endpoint for local weather data. This doesn't update as often as I'd like. But it compares the outdoor temperature with the reported temperature of my thermostat, and then the messages below that are determined by a comparison of those values. I'm also using HTMX to load each card, and each tab of the energy card separately so that I don't have no wait on all requests for the dashboard to load. Not that it's slow - the home assistant API is surprisingly efficient at loading a great deal of logs. When you click my dogs face, she says WOOF WOOF WOOF in a modal to offer me a search with searxng.

  • I keep my container volumes in sub-directory of that of the docker compose file and tar them up and put them somewhere safe. I spent ages trying to figure out how to back up a container, because I thought that the state of a database was in memory, which I suppose it is, but when you stop it, it's just a bunch of files like everything else, so I elected to keep it simple. I've been thinking of creating a cron job to do it routinely. I'm not sure what you mean regarding the codeberg question.

  • Awesome! I have a very similar setup to you. I recommend installing pi-hole regardless and putting at least Hagezi's normal block list on it, just for a sane web browsing experience.

    Home Assistant is also really good, because it includes a bunch of stuff that you probably wouldn't first think of. For instance, I'm using its API to request the indoor temperature from my home thermostat and the outdoor temperature from a weather module that it has built in, and I've programmed it to let me know when it's too hot to walk the dog, and when to open/close the windows in the house to keep it as cool as possible in this heatwave.

    I'm using LeafWiki for home documentation. A list of things I intend to try hosting, my backup strategy which I'm bound to otherwise forget. I'm thinking about putting all of our meals on there so that we when we get tired of a particular meal for a while, we can return to it when we're at a loose end with the shopping.

  • Thanks. This is really interesting but doesn't appear to be aimed at the same audience that I'm thinking of. I'm thinking of a solution for people who aren't technical and just want to share documentation or static style information and view that like a documentation site.

  • Thanks. I didn't know about the LRC format, this is really interesting for the lyrics problem. But just to be clear, I'm not thinking (specifically) about lyrics, I'm thinking about having a standard format for sharing directories of textual or simple html documents for hosting privately. So if I wanted to share my smoothie recipes for instance, I'd just save them all to a .mds file for anyone to upload to their .mds application and not worry about directory structure or manually moving files around an actual filesystem.

  • That's awesome! I would never have expected that kind of throughput. On the day of your popular post, did you feel the traffic while trying to use the internet yourself at all? I sometimes fear that I'm going to get hit by something that interrupts what I'm doing and I'll have to take the server down temporarily. It hasn't happened yet though. I use a cloudflare tunnel mostly because I don't have a static IP address, but it does help reassure me in the event of a DDOS and blocking bot traffic. Those services are free by the way (for the time being at least! Who knows about the future)

  • Thanks 😃 I've posted it there before when it was still in its early stages, but have avoided so recently for two reasons:

    1. While federation is and has always been the plan, I have not yet written any functionality for this. The project is in the first phase, which focuses on fulfilling functionality that makes an instance worthwhile in silo.
    2. While it will be federated, it will not be a part of the fediverse. This is a distinction I have learned since initially posting it there. Instances will communicate with each other, but I have no intention of adding activitypub or anything like that to have posts on other platforms.

    I will look out for other communities though, do you have any more in mind?

  • Yeah, well, you're talking to a human with contradictions and biases. I don't want to use it, but I suppose the scenario presented is the lesser of two evils for me personally.

    I don't know what a language classifier is. I'm chatting to you about it because you seem interested, but otherwise I prefer to live as though none of this exists. That might make me some kind of luddite.

    I've come to the same place with politics. It got to a point recently where, in my opinion, the worst possible act has been committed by the most powerful people with the most concrete evidence that we're ever going to see. In my mind it was the ultimate test to see if we mere mortals had any sort of control over justice and unchecked power. Once it became evident to me that we don't, I have completely checked out, and will now live my life in ignorance to politics, because if I don't have control, and it depresses me, the best thing for me to do is try to carve out a little slice of this world to live in ignorant contentment.

  • Well, as I said I'm not really going to try to solve it. I prefer to not see headlines that talk about AI, politics and some other things, and I'll filter them out and I'll use the tools that are already available to me to do so. Now if my RSS app came out with a feature that used AI sentiment analysis to filter out those topics, I'd probably switch it on, but I'm not going to involve myself in solving the problem in any regard, but in the hypothetical, "regex soup" would rank higher than AI.

  • I find that whenever I have used AI to find a solution, I have forfeited learning, so I avoid it completely so that I can learn about the thing that AI would have otherwise shortcut for me. Regarding this specific example, while it may or may not be the case that AI is the best tool for sentiment analysis, it's not the best or most efficient tool for keyword filtering, and keyword filtering is all I'd really need. In the event that I cared enough about the filtering to find or build a solution, it wouldn't be with AI for this reason, but also because of the aforementioned reasons. Even if they're not applicable to this very scenario, I'd rather not involve myself in the technology at all if I can help it.

    Me: I'm sick of hearing about AI. It's very existence brings me down. It's bad for the environment, bad for code, bad for mental illness, bad for humans.

    AI: Sorry to interrupt, but have you considered using AI to help with this matter?

    Legitimately, I agree it would be a good use, but I will be sticking with non-AI solutions regardless.
