  • TIL you can two-finger tap the touchpad to perform a right click

  • Middle click isn't a shortcut for paste in Linux, it's what Unix had before cut-copy-paste was invented.

    Highlighted text will be stored in what's called the Primary Buffer. This is separate from the "clipboard." Middle clicking in a text entry field will insert the highlighted text. No action needs to be copied. Watch, on a linux system:

    Open a GUI text editor. kwrite, gedit, libreoffice, whatever.

    Highlight and Ctrl+C this text: This text was stored in the clipboard.

    Simply highlight this text: This text was stored in the primary buffer.

    click in your text editor and middle click. Then hit enter for a new line, then hit Ctrl+V. Neat, huh?

  • Every touchpad I've ever used where the whole thing was a physical button, pushing it hard enough to click it would squish my finger skin enough to move the mouse pointer a little.

    On tasks as basic as web browsing, where things like hyperlinks are actually quite small on the screen, that was often enough to move the cursor off the link. Or moving a volume slider, the process of letting go of the button would slightly move the cursor.

  • I'm gonna say no it wasn't expected. I'd expect toxic chemicals, heavy metals etc. I would expect a data center to discharge water that is unsafe and damaging, they are after all being run by Captain Planet villains...but bacteria? I wouldn't have called that one.

  • I have a copy of The Hunt For Red October that was taped in December off of HBO, and it's got this ad before it for...you know those children's games, it's a plastic enclosure, you fill it with water, there are like little plastic rings or balls, and you like push a button to squirt water around the enclosure to move the rings around, it's like if you explained the concept of Pinball to someone, and the only language you share in common is Klingon? I have a late 80's early 90's ad for that.

  • My father's 2017 Toyota Avalon gets 2 mpg better than my 2003 Chevrolet S10. How does a slickly shaped sports sedan make 20mpg when a 23 year old pickup with an engine that was primitive even then make 18? Meanwhile a 90's Corvette can make 30.

  • Well I've got three answers to that.

    The most severe weather I sheltered in place from was hurricane Fran. Fortunately it didn't rearrange my family's own chunk of the forest too bad but some trees were thrown on a few houses.

    The most severe weather I've experienced unsheltered was Hurricane Noel. The dumbfuck 20 year old I used to be decided to ride a motorcycle from Daytona to West Palm Beach for no particular reason. I got my giblets rinsed. That wasn't the most unpleasant weather I've ever been in though, I rode that same motorcycle through a freezing rain storm about 3 years later. I kept having to pound my fist into my visor to de-ice it.

    The worst aftermath of weather I've seen but wasn't personally in was an EF-3 tornado. It was on the ground for over an hour, it cut a path a thousand feet wide and easily 50 miles long, tearing through forest, neighborhoods and commercial districts. I worked as a flight instructor at a nearby airport, so afterward I got a fairly good look at the damage path from the air. It looked kind of like a logging operation, you know how they'll take a parcel of land and clear cut it either for development or for the timber? Except smeared across the landscape crossing roads and taking houses and buildings with the trees.

  • The CGA card used that technique anyway. The IBM CGA card had a 9-pin RGBI digital output and an RCA analog NTSC output. There was a 16 color text mode, rarely used. Color graphics were usually done via the 4 color mode, which chose between four awful pallettes: light and dark variants of white black magenta and cyan, or yellow black red-orange and yellow. So they appeared kinda terrible on an RGBI monitor, but by dithering the colors together and using the analog output, you'd get other colors.

  • I've kinda known that most of my life because my elementary school had a lab of IIes, most of which had color monitors, a couple of them had monochrome monitors. So there were a couple of them that were inexplicably "just green." Most of the rest of that I learned from The 8-Bit Guy on Youtube.

    That Wozniak guy's a good electrical engineer. Clever dude.

  • The first one that leaps to mind is The Phantom Menace. World-class score, Duel Of The Fates alone is utterly epic. Casting is almost perfect, probably don't ruin that poor child's life. Get a teenager to play Anakin. Set and costume design are great, the plot is ridiculous. The boys at RedLetterMedia articulated it better than I ever will, but, you could fix it with a script rewrite or two.

    Popeye also jumps to mind. The 1980 live-action movie starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall. Paramount lost the bid to make Annie, the studio had their hearts set on making a broadway musical adaptation of a depression-era IP, and the first thing that occurred to anyone was they had the rights to Popeye. Of all things. Annie is a broadway musical, so songs complete with dance numbers were already built in. Popeye is a cartoon wedged somewhere between Betty Boop and Bugs Bunny. They decided to make a Popeye musical. And commenced principal photography before writing any songs. They ADR'd songs over top of scenes they shot before the songs were written. Which is why it's...not really remembered as a musical. Directed by Robert "I directed MASH" Altman very much in his style, much of the film consists of characters blathering over each other incessantly. The collision of the cartoon physics and character proportions with the very grounded Altman style is uniquely jarring. AND YET. The set design, cinematography and costume design are excellent. It's a badly conceived stupid idea executed by consummate professionals.
