  • The sand storage is used for district heating. It's not much of a substitute for single homes that have electrical heating or are off-grid.

    It's a great way to balance both the electrical and the heating grids so that more electricity from renewables can be used to offset other means of heat production, but it needs to be done by the district heating supplier. I doubt it makes sense for individual houses.

  • I have never even read those names before, and I think this illustrates the issue.

    Protest songs used to reach world wide top charts because that's what people bought. This was ruined by commercialization, so that charts now only show what labels want to sell. People who actually choose what music to consume will scatter out into online bubbles that are completely detached from the mainstream and public view.

    This makes it almost impossible to reach as big an audience as done by RATM and others did in previous decades.

    Perhaps young people ought to do protest TikToks instead of protest songs.

    If you give them a 20, they'll start giving back 9.50 before you can even attempt to do the exact coin exchange.

    If instead you give the 0.50 first, they can't start giving change before you've presented the rest of the cash.

    That's how you pay 20.50 in order to get 10 back.

    It's something you can do for your own sake to avoid having a pocket full of shrapnel. It's not necessarily a help for the cashier, and they'll definitely tell you if they need it. So, please don't hold up the queue just to give exact or optimal change.

  • You have to do it like an old lady. First you hand over the 50 cents. Then you wait for the cashier to acknowledge that fifty cents is pretty fucking far from 10.50. When they say you're ten short, then you pass the 20.

  • It's more of a journalist thing. They take the words out of your mouth to reach their own conclusion fast and deliver an answer that'll fit inside the allocated screen time.

  • I think things will make a turn in about ten years. Yes, climate is very critical, but the kids of today will have a better shot at shaping the world in a time when the last old ideas from the fossil fueled age have finally died.

    It's going to get rough, but at least they have a chance of changing it. We never did get a chance, because the boomers were kept alive with improved healthcare. It's the same people who have all the wealth and power today as it was in 1980s.

    So maybe Gen-X and millennials will be the next old assholes, but at least they're better educated and their views are much better aligned with younger generations than the old ones. We might finally be able to work together across generations politically in just a few years time. It's much needed, and it's hard work, but I envy the kids who get to be the creators of the post-boomer society.

  • They'll learn the lesson of a break up just like anyone else. They'll get over it and eventually find another chatbot.

    It might even prepare them somewhat for IRL relationships. Things do not always work out and you can't count on the other part to always do as expected.

    It could actually be interesting to give these bots less than ideal personalities just to teach the users how to interact with actual people. With some caution though, because I can definitely see that go really bad too.
