  • That's what it was called when I started getting it for free with my subscription to Google Play Music. :)

  • It's not often, but yeah, sometimes I'll get a "Jump Ahead >>>" button overlay that skips the sponsor ad-read and/or a clear auto-generated "segment" that is the sponsor ad-read.

Still, I never expected YT Red to remove uploaded content, only to stop inserted advertisements.

  • US here. I remember when it changed, probably 20-25 years ago. (Tho, of course it was gradual and localized and I'm only one data point.) I was an undergrad, and not in my first year.

IIRC, it was because "gulf stream" was a little ambiguous, because there's a lot of gulfs many of which contain oceanic currents / stream. But, if someone in the U.S. or EU says "gulf stream" they are always talking about AMOC.

  • If the sword isn't part of any of the lions, I don't see why the bullet would have to be one of the robot-animal-vehicles.

  • Thanks for the clarification. I was too young to program the 2600. I started programming on PC-compatible.

  • IIRC, the 2600 didn't have a graphics processor. So, you had to "chase the ray" with CPU instructions, which made for some interesting limitations.

  • browser fingerprinting

Thing is, while it wasn't called "browser fingerprinting" immediately, it basically started as soon as JS was around. And feature-detection / media-queries actually make for better compatibility than just User-Agent strings (and other headers).

Content negotiation never really caught on, as best as I can tell. There's a number of headers that the client can send so that the server can select a version by language, content-type, and a few other things, but in all the web deployments I've ever done content-negotiation was never a consideration.

Almost any information can be abused.

  • They used to provide like a 3-day trial, but I couldn't find any sort of offer like that currently active.

If you are just curious about what they have on their streaming service, you can get a rough estimate by browsing their download store. It's not a perfect match, but it's very close. It is quite rare for an artist / studio / publisher to let Qobuz stream it but not sell a download or vice-versa.

  • Another fairly happy Qobuz user here. Prior to that I used Tidal, which has a better Android Auto experience, IMO. Prior to that I used YouTube Music, and technically I still have a subscription to that because I got used to YouTube Red (now Premium) when it came free with Google Music (now YouTube Music). I prefer a streaming service; I find it much easier to discover music that way.

For digital purchases, while that is possible through Qobuz, every artist I know would prefer you buy from their Bandcamp. ISTR Bandcamp might have been doing some shady anti-union stuff, but I could be misremembering and I wouldn't know of any great alternatives.

  • So say we all: "Recreational drug use that doesn't disrupt your life isn't a substance abuse disorder."

  • Whoa. First, it's neither your fault nor mine that you might be in that 20% of exercise resistant depression. I mean, it's like a 1 in 5 chance, so not uncommon.

Also, thanks for letting me know that you have tried that; I'm sorry if you've told me before and I forgot. I asked because I didn't recall. I agree that a 2-3 mile walk every day is "enough" light exercise.

I'm not a professional, so please forgive me if my suggestions aren't professional-quality. Exposure to nature helps some people. You might make sure your diet has enough Vitamin D, very low levels can affect mood. Are you self-isolating, even if you aren't lonely? Maybe try to have more IRL social interactions; even if they are superficial, good ones can help confirm that not everyone deserves your anger. Also, maybe anger needs more high-intensity work for less time -- or maybe resistance training (weight lifting) instead of cardio?

Have you looked into getting professional help?

  • My depression often tells me those people don't care that much either. But, my parents are dead, I don't have a partner, and maybe my friends aren't "close" enough.

  • Talk to the providers, some may be willing to waive that depending on need. Also, that seems expensive; I'm on shitty healthcard.gov insurance and my co-pay per session was only 40 USD. I know when you are struggling, 40 can feel just as unreachable as 200, but getting that price down can be the difference between spiraling down or climbing up and out.

Talk to the people that are offering even shitty help -- see if they have ideas for getting you professional help, maybe they could even pay the provider for you, or know about lower-cost services in your area.

  • As someone with a recurring severe depressive mood disorder diagnosis, I always found the validation helpful. I could complain without pushback to them. And, it help dissuade me that I was actually the source of everything bad. But, ultimately, I needed to get pharmacological help AND focus the core health items: sleep, food/water/diet, exercise/activity.

  • Fascists and right wingers too?

Probably. Certainly republicans, so fascism isn't a deal-breaker for them.

the conspiracies tend to be different

Plenty of union members believe in the "jewish deep state", e.g., so I don't think the conspiracies are that different.

I agree that freedoms can be abused. And, they can certainly be used for right-wing purposes. I also agree that there are plenty of fallacious arguments for freedom, some of which are based on conspiratorial thinking. But, fighting for freedoms of the people and restrictions on the state is always a left-wing activity.

That said, I don't know where the balance is or should be between solidarity and rejecting intolerance. At the moment, I'm more in favor of protecting marginalized persons by aggressively excluding intolerant people, particularly if their intolerant behavior is well-documented and they still refuse to reject and remediate it. So, I do see the fascists in open source as a problem.

  • You'll find plenty of bigots and conspiracy theorists in unions, too. Union activity is still left-wing activity.

  • All Open Source / Free Software is building the commons. Strong copyleft is using the weapons of the state to help the commons stay under collective ownership.

  • a 5 ft fall can genuinely be deadly

Most adults are tall enough that their brain/head/face can get serious injuries in an uncontrolled loss of consciousness. Any additional height simply makes the fall harder to control and increases the energy that needs to be safely dispersed.

Yes, even falls from household ladders are deadly serious.
