  • Mastodon.social has a "spam problem" because they're the largest target. We're lucky it's them because they're one of the few instances with the resources to take on the problem. They've also contributed a ton - in tools and strategies - to help other instances deal with the problem.

  • Speaking as a measles stan, this is incredible news. We're back, baby!

  • The MAU counter at mastodon.social reset. It happened at about the same time they had an issue and had to recover data so I think it was related to that.

  • Define "win a trade war." If Trump's definition is 'Canada becomes non-viable as a country and agrees to become a cherished 51st state,' then the US can't win a trade war either. The US has a much larger economy and can inflict more damage on Canada, but the US still can't "win" in the extreme way you're talking about. 'No one wins and everyone suffers' is basically a defining characteristic of trade wars.

Just in the auto industry, half a million Canadians would lose their jobs. It's easy to say that you shouldn't "concede" symbolism when you're not responsible for people's well-being. Again, there was always going to be a face-saving gesture. Your expectation that there wouldn't be is unrealistic. Agreeing to some border theatre nonsense (to help solve imaginary problems!) that Canada would've done anyway had someone just asked nicely is not a big deal. Canada didn't need an economic threat to... join a task force that was a Canadian proposal to begin with. The only reason that didn't already exist is because ~0% of the fentanyl getting into the US is coming from Canada.

Well this is always the case everywhere. But 99.9999999% of the time, you don't have to worry about the US reneging on its end of the deal on a whim. Every country knows that the other country could announce tariffs any time. But they typically have reasonable assurances that they won't. Trump offers no such assurances beyond "I have altered the deal. Pray I do not alter it further."

    And?

Canada and Mexico have no control over this.

"We're entering into a trade war because you might in the future go back on not having a trade war and start a trade war!"

And you're talking about this like there are no costs to Trump or the US for doing this. There are. He blinked because it was going to cost him. As much as he can say, 'this is a necessary sacrifice,' he's not personally willing to sacrifice a goddamn thing. Those costs will increase over time and skyrocket as we approach midterms.

But it was announced and formed based on Trump talking points after the 2024 election.

Yes, they said "this fucking moron keeps talking about imaginary border shit. Let's just pass this and hopefully it shuts him up."

But that would've happened even if he didn't sign the tariff order. You're attributing it to Trump signing the tariff order and saying that Canada has just conceded it. That's not true.

  • There is no possible world where Canada fights a trade war with the US and has a complete and total victory where Trump admits utter defeat. That's just fantasy. In international political disputes people are always given the chance to save face -- that's just how shit works. The "what about a month from now" argument would also always be true. Even if he announced a permanent end to tariffs he could still announce tariffs tomorrow.

Trump stared down Canada and Mexico and lost. He caved. It was obvious that he was caving when the White House started softening their messaging midday and saying that everything was just a big misunderstanding. The only concession he got was the ability to save face. Mexico re-announced an already in-place commitment. Canada announced some symbolic nonsense. That $1.3B in your original comment was announced more than a month before Trump took office.

He already has Fox News. We don't need to help polish his losses into victories too.

  • Definitely weird on first reading. New names often seem weird or dumb at first so maybe I'll just get used to it. Anglicizing it might make sense? Fleamarkt?

  • Wait, his plan to artificially increase prices won't lower prices?!?!

  • Came here to quote that same thing.

This is insane. If anyone hasn't yet, cancel your subscriptions.

LAT should maybe be banned here too. This is editorial not news but, if they're willing to completely reverse the meaning without acknowledgement or changing attribution, how can we trust a word in that paper? They've just discredited everyone who works there.

  • I'd donate some eggs to Trump's face on Mt Rushmore (and most other places)

  • Agreed. It immediately went from being maybe the best app in the Fediverse to the 3rd best for its own service. I stopped using Pixelfed altogether until Pixelix got good enough to be a replacement.

I honestly don't understand how getting the new app to feature parity with the old wasn't maximum priority. It at least seems like it's going to get there pretty soon.

  • I think it was more that he wanted to open source the app but had built it while he was learning so it was pretty messy and he felt insecure about it. So he rebuilt the app from scratch and open-sourced it. It just isn't quite at feature parity to the old app yet. Pretty sure dark mode is coming in the next update though.

  • So far so good! Some very unscientific observations from spending an absurd amount of time scrolling local on pixelfed.social:

The people coming from Instagram and TikTok seem way less grumpy than the microbloggers. People are having a lot of fun and not complaining about much. It's kind of a trip seeing happy, joyful people on the Fediverse to be honest. Everything in the world suuuuuuuucks right now, so it's felt like a bit of a refuge. Sometimes I'll accidentally bounce over to the global feed and oh man is the change in tone jarring.

People don't seem to have a problem with servers like the Twitter migrants did. Folks are still talking about it a lot on Mastodon though. I've literally not seen a single post about Pixelfed being "too complicated" to succeed, whereas it was (and is) pretty common to see "this place is great and all, but..." posts in the microblogging neighbourhood. Not sure why this is but it might be because the people coming to Pixelfed are generally younger than Mastodon users. This is just a guess, but I'd estimate the average age of Mastodon users is maybe mid-40s. Most of the people pouring into Pixelfed appear to be in their mid-to-late-20s. Perhaps those folks are just more accustomed to servers through Discord and gaming? Though people are generally captioning photos and not writing out lists of things they're unhappy about and they could also just be unaware of servers altogether...

Pixelfed is easily the most diverse "corner" of the Fediverse now. Fedi is very white but a large number coming over now aren't. Pixelfed.social has probably gone from being 75% men to 75% women in the last few weeks. Diversity is the best possible thing for the social web.

I've seen a bunch of people on Instagram promoting Feb 1st as "Global Switch Day" so hopefully it'll keep blowing up.

  • They're just re-reporting something from Fox News.

This story seems to be circulating exclusively through right-wing news. Just took a quick look but Newsweek is probably the furthest left reporting this. Otherwise, it's like NYPost, Daily Mail, News. com. au and a bunch of also-rans of right-wing news media.

  • Crypto chat! Crypto pics! Crypto vids! Nostr! Crypto!

  • Thanks for being a good sport. In these trying times we have to cherish every genuine updog moment we find ourselves in.

    It's federated encrypted messaging :)

  • Not too much. Sup with you?

  • Why not just send them to a specific instance? Once you're here it's pretty simple.

  • There's no fucking way they're breaking even.
