  • Why would it be worth mentioning? A person died. A medic had to climb down there and determine he was dead. He then had to climb out and tell the family that he was dead. The fire department then had to retrieve the body. The police had to write a report about what they saw on scene. A family is grieving now.

    The guy was an asshole and bad person. But he was a human. Being a republican or democrat has nothing to do with death. Be a sensitive human and respect death.

  • Keep pounding it into them. The second most worst thing I had to do as a medic was hand out teddy bears to injured and sick children. I hated those calls.

    ***A Teddy Bear is perhaps the greatest medical device ever invented for treating a sick or injured child on scene. A shout out and all Blessings to our local motorcycle club for donating Teddy Bears to us by the case. They eased a lot of fear and pain.

  • Oh I agree, those are generally the base errors. People are stupid and do a lot of stupid things and disable safety devices or ignore safety protocols. I can remember scraping 4 fingers out of a 40 ton punch press with a putty knife, (it was handy), at an industrial accident with a putty knife. He had wired a safety latch back. Both of the lawnmower fatalities were caused by operating a heavy riding mower going across a steep side hill. The mowers rolled and crushed and suffocated the operators.

    As a medic, I made my living dealing with everyone else's stupid actions.

  • Concrete lathes are far from a new idea. During WW1, the US needed more lathes than we had. It could take years for a cast iron casting to age enough sitting outside before you could do the final machining to actually build a lathe.

    So concrete was tried as a substitute for cast iron. It has some good properties, it cures quickly, is rigid enough, and dampens vibrations pretty well. The downsides are you require a physically larger machine that takes up more floor space, and they are difficult to move making resale difficult, and they don't last as long in that usage, so they aren't cheaper in the long run.

    Concrete lathes had their day and quickly died out to be forgotten.

  • “Accidents” happen. (I used to be a medic, and I firmly believe there is no such thing as a true “accident”.) If you look at the whole scene, you can find the point on the timeline up to the “accident” where the patient got stupid. And then I had to be there.

    And yes, drunk mowing is a real thing. I had to overturn a riding lawnmower once to look for a bit of finger. But the two fatalities involving lawnmowers I did, had no alcohol involved—just stupidity was all that was required.

  • A Yeet Cannon is a fine solution to any TV. Personally I recommend a 12ga slug or buckshot for any and all TVs. There is nothing worth the effort to watch and even less worth paying for.

  • I won't argue with your thought. I'm certainly no accredited expert either, just a dad that, along with my wife, raise 4 daughters and pets - mostly working hunting dogs.

    My take is that baby talk is impossible to do in a loud and angry voice. And is always done in a soft and gentle tone. I have noticed that when training dogs, I'm a fan of Spaniels, that if you are speaking in a loud voice and that has angry tones, they will start to separate from you and watch you closely. Because ain't no one wants to get yelled at. It's kind of similar to loud sharp barking I suppose. Cats though, are generally arse holes and just don't care......

    When our Daughters were newborns, they started to make just sounds after about a month. So baby talk was was pretty much just making intelligible sounds back at them in a soft and soothing tone. As they started to actually learn and use "real" words, less baby talk and far more normal speech is used by parents I think. But children are also smart enough to know the different between the baby talk when playing peek-a-boo with daddy and then need for normal speech at other times.

    I certainly don't see baby talk to infants and small children as an issue except in rare disfunctional family situations.

  • I've tried electrics, disposables, and the 200 blade monstrosity cartridges, (or whatever blade count they are up to now). But none of them shave as well as my trusty Slim Adjustable. I've also got a GEM single edge and a Schick Injector also - I love that Injector too. I got them because those are the razors I remember my Grandfathers using to shave with.

    So I too can highly recommend them also. One razor to last a lifetime.

  • Yes, you can still find rural small town radio stations that feature local programming. Collage stations often are desperate for content. But it's not quite like it was 30+ years ago. I live in the middle of a forest with very low population density. So I can listen to such a radio station, provided the weather is right, I'm in my tractor, and at the end of my driveway in just the right spot. :) They used to broadcast MLB games, but that's gotten far, far too expensive. (Baseball and radio is meant to go together).

    From 8AM to noon they have local programing with the local goings on done live. Then from noon to 4PM it's pretty much canned music with news and weather, from 4PM to 6PM it's local programming from the Reservation, (Red Lake Ojibwa). They have some very good programming worth a listen. Then from about 7PM to 8PMish during the school year it's High School sports. And depending on the day, it can vary between the girls teams and the boys teams. After that, it back to canned programming.

    I often wonder about how much longer they can make enough money to keep the station going and staffed.

  • Blades are a quick internet trip away to order. But for the little travel I do, I either skip shaving if it's a short trip, pack an electric, or bring a cheap Bic disposable to use. I have packed a cheap safety razor and brush and soap in my Doff bag for special occasions, but that's way too much effort as a rule.
