  • Why can't we go back to small phones?

  • I think it's a psychological thing.

    Like, while thinking about what kind of phone we want - a small phone sounds pretty good. But when it comes time to buy it, we start comparing phones, and we see some small ones, and some slightly bigger ones, and some really big ones. We tend to go bigger than we'd originally intended because of psychological anchoring effects.

    The slightly bigger phone is seen as a slightly better phone. "not too big" we think, as we compare it to some monsters; and the key stats such as screen resolution and battery capacity sound slightly better. So we tend to buy that bigger phone even if it isn't what we actually thought we wanted.

    [edit] I should say that I'm saying "we" in a totally generic way. I definitely don't do this myself. I've literally only ever owned smartphone in my life, and it isn't particularly big or flashy. I have an anti-phone attitude.

  • I've wondered about this too.

    The USA government has enormous debt, which grows every year due to an enormous deficit. But historically people have been relatively comfortable with just letting that continue to grow, because it is balanced by economic growth and stability (roughly speaking).

    But now that the government is somewhat unstable... bad things might happen to the currency. The debt will continue to rise, but the productivity and stability that underpin it are eroding. It may collapse.

  • They're not that cash strapped though. Their blog post says that they need the revenue to 'grow', and they go on to talk about the new people they've added to the board. So it isn't really about getting enough money to survive. It's about getting money to support a top-heavy company structure.

  • I'm not sure what 'more grace' you think Zelenskyy could have shown in a situation like that. Trump and Vance are telling him that he's "gambling with World War III", and telling him that he needs to say "thank you" - but without letting him finish a sentence. Trump was saying some really harsh stuff, but not allowing Zeleskyy to respond to it. This is the only time Zelenskyy tried to talk over the top of him; and you think it is "super annoying".

    In the earlier parts of the meeting, Trump was not engaged at all. Trump commented that "I wasn't there then" while Zelenskyy gave context of how Russia has abused trust given to them in diplomacy; apparently Trump thinks nothing matters unless he is personally involved. This is the attitude Trump brought to the meeting, but you think Zelenskyy was "super annoying" and should have handled this senseless berating with more grace. I disagree with you.

  • The footage of this meeting is truly remarkable and worth watching.

    I think it's important to watch uncut unedited footage of meetings like this from time to time, to see the behaviour of leaders first hand. Otherwise it is too easy to just get swept up in the narrative of whatever social bubble you interact with.

    In this meeting Trump demonstrates a total disinterest in any past events or context for current decisions; but he becomes quite animated and angry at the end of the video. Apparently he felt criticised and wanted to hit back. But he didn't seem to be paying much attention at all to what was being said.

    Zelenskyy is calm throughout, but has clear frustration as Vance and Trump speak over the top of him. Trump accuses Zelenskyy of total disrespect, and says he is 'gambling with World War III'.

    Really, it is worth watching. See how leaders of the USA behave.

  • I use to think about this a lot, and would constantly try to fix it - trying to look like I wasn't just playing with my dick while doing it.

    But now that I'm older I realise most people know clothes do this, and that it doesn't really look like a boner anyway. And people generally aren't looking at me wondering if I've got a boner, and they probably don't care if I do unless I'm also staring at them or something. .... So now I just worry about accidentally staring at people. (And my eyesight isn't great, so it isn't always easy to tell.)

  • Seems like the person wants to learn something, but with zero effort. (i.e. won't read the article; and certainly won't look for additional context or information.) So maybe it would be better to post the question into an AI chatbot. You can just ask whatever question, and get some plausible but possibly-bullshit answer; then feel good for satisfying your curiosity.

  • For sure. I've been looking for a solid OneNote replacement for a few years now. Inking is the only major barrier.

    I really like OneNote, and I've been using it for more than 10 years. But in recent years, my dislike for Microsoft has grown to the point where I feel I need to stop using all their products.

    Right now I'm using xournal++ a lot. It has really excellent drawing functionality; but zero organisational functions. (I'm organising my xournal notes using just file names and folder structure.)

    What I really want is integrated xournal support with Obsidian, or Joplin. In Joplin, I've tried inserting a pdf into my notes, and telling Joplin to open the pdf by launching xournal++. That sort of works; but the viewing of the pdf in Joplin shows a window-within-a-window; and the creating of new notes is fiddly; so I decided it wasn't quite good enough.

  • I haven't run into the problem of people not being able to use a mouse - but I've found that very few young people are able to tell if something is saved on their own computer or being accessed over the internet. Saving or downloading files is not something they are familiar with. (Which I suppose is because a lot of modern software makes cloud stuff so silky smooth that people don't notice it.)

  • It seems to me that Bernie is doing his best to create and energize a movement of working-class people in support of a better world. It isn't trying to hijack an existing movement; because no cohesive movement currently exists. The lack of cohesion is exactly what Bernie is trying to address.

  • I don't know how many users reddit has, but it is a lot more than lemmy. Lemmy is quite small in terms of number of users.

    But I think focusing on relative numbers of users is a mistake. Forty thousand people is still a lot of people. And we can see that it is enough people to create a vibrant community with a steady stream of good content and conversations. So the fact that it is small compared to other social media is not really relevant, in my opinion. Having a thousand times more users doesn't make things a thousand times better - that's for sure.

    (That said, I do think its worth noting if the number of users is going up or down... because if there was a significant downward trend, that would be a bad sign.)
