  • I think that advocates are right in that, once the kinks are worked out, they will be far safer than human drivers.

    At the same time, I think the implications lead to a lot of dystopian implications for cities. Like, a properly tuned self driving car will never hit a pedestrian. So pedestrians in cities will learn they can safely step out into the street even in oncoming traffic. But this will cause the car to swerve and slam to a halt, which us a bad UX for the passenger. Enter: automatically reported jaywalking offenses powered by car cameras and facial recognition technology.

  • My take - based on everything you are saying in this thread, it sounds like you aren't happy, but that you are balancing that unhappiness with potential unhappiness you are worried about facing if you were to try for another job.

    You talk about pay and creature comforts - but you seem to be avoiding talking about meaning. What is your purpose in life? Because if this job facilitates that purpose, then by all means, keep it. But if it undermines it, then you should ditch it.

    Like, imagine you are on your deathbed, and a young highschool boy comes to interview you about your life for a school project. He asks - what did you accomplish? What are you most proud of? What did you learn? What is a story you'd like to tell my class? What are your regrets? If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?

  • Iirc, Maverick is/was its own chain. Maybe they got acquired. The name change seems like a good move.

    Also, not to hail corporate too much, but the Maverick burritos are legitimately the best value meal for food to go in my area. About $7 for a big burrito that doesnt make me feel like shit, and that I can walk in the door and grab from under the heat lamp myself.

  • I mean, I am re-reading your post, and it doesnt look like you are asking for advice, but rather seeking a discussion of an observed phenomenon. You use phrases like "whats up with X?" and "is it always the fate of Y?" Then at the end you ask for suggestions of other communities to avoid, which seems, at least in my reading, to be the only time you are asking for advice. So in a post which seems, for the bulk of it, to want general discussion, it seems reasonable to want to see specific examples of what we are discussing.

  • This is a political non-starter, and you've pretty much gotten to the point all the people criticising this post are trying to make. Almost no one is willing to make a significant sacrifice in their lifestyle for the sake of the climate, which is why memes like the above exist. They create a make-believe fairytale land where we just have to beat the big bad, and we can all live happily ever after.

    But imagine what would happen in any democratically elected nation if a politician actually started making everyones lives worse. Sure, some would keep a stiff upper lip and bear it - but the vast majority would put them out on their ass asap in favor of the first person who said they would make things better.

    That's why literally every climate proposal includes policies to improve things for the average person. Carbon dividends or UBI or trains or street trees or green jobs, etc. You have to be realistic about politics as much as you are realistic about carbon economics.

  • The products you buy were made in factories powered by fossil fuels, shipped across oceans in fossil fuel powered ships, and arrive at the shop in fossil fuel powered trucks. The food you eat is fertilized with fossil fuels, and the industrial growing, processing, and packaging process puts carbon into the atmosphere. The streets you walk on are made from concrete, which releases carbon into the atmosphere from the chemical process used to synthesize it. And even if you live some magical life where you can avoid personally paying the cost of all of these things, the same is not true of everyone else, who needs to drive cars to work on asphalt highways, heat their homes with wood/propane/ng stoves, eats industrially produced food, and have all this economic activity protected via a fossil fuel powered military. And an increased price of carbon means that their lives cost more, which means they need higher wages, which means everything they produce that you might buy also gets more expensive.

    I don't disagree with you that gas prices should be higher. In fact, I think the only way to get from here to there is to appropriately price carbon. But to act like there is no potential for hardship among average people - that there arent legitimate challenges to weening off the carbon-heavy economy we are used to - is disingenuous at best

  • I still feel like these numbers are not appropriately representative... iirc, the vast majority of world oil supplies come from nationalized oil companies, which keep the lions share of the profits of oil production as a source of national revenue. So assuming I havent been misled, my best guess is that the private firms are contracted for extraction and refinement, and so the total carbon footprint gets lumped together under them, rather than being split between the national governments who contract them

  • I mean, I think more people than that do care about your immediate a safety and well being. If you collapse to the floor in the middle of your bowling league, they will call an ambulance. And if you break down on the side of the road, odds are someone will stop to help you out eventually.

    But if your problem is "I'm sad", then.... what am I supposed to do about that?

    I find a lot of these comments weird. They are talking about the moments - the weeks, months, and hours leading up to death. But death itself? Your vision goes dark. Your hearing stops. No sense of touch or smell or taste or balance. Just your sense of consciousness. The flame about to reach the base of the candle. There is no "if". You will be Alone. You must face your death alone. There is no other way.

    I, personally, will try my best to be prepared.

    Also, the struggle you are facing in navigating the system while disabled is the reason social workers exist. So if you dont have one already, you should get one, and if yours sucks, you should do everything you can to get a better one.

    Stay with family or friends instead of being homeless. If you were the guy who helped everyone, then someone you know has a couch you can crash. You should also be able to lean on your social network to help you find a good lawyer and social worker.

    Hopefully you are in regular contact with your PCP - if they havent already, have them give you a perscription sleep aide. Hopefully getting a bit more sleep will help your mental state.

    For the pain - you probably won't like hearing this, but it's in your head. All pain has always been in your head. It has to be. There is no other place for it to be. Your nerves respond to stimuli and send signals to your brain, of course - but it only becomes pain when your brain interprets those signals as Bad. From the sounds of things, these injuries will be with you for the rest of your life, at least to some degree. But the pain doesn't have to be. Just like you can quickly get used to the smell of a stinky trash can if you stay in the same room for a while, or forget the sound of your refrigerator humming in the background, so too can you learn to let the signals your nerves are sending fade into background noise. Your current cycle is that your nerves send signals, so your brain interprets it as pain, and your conscious mind feels it and says "No no no no no! Bad bad bad!" This response tells the subconscious part of your brain that this is important information that it needs to deliver to you as urgently as possible. Breaking the cycle requires you, the conscious you, to recieve the message of pain and not react. To feel the pain, but remain calm, and become interested in and curious about the pain sensation itself. To notice the pain, but say "well that's annoying, but I have more important things to do." This non-reaction tells the subconscious part of your brain that these sensations are not an emergency - you got the message, it isnt very important or urgent. So the subconscious will stop reporting it as urgently.

  • Right. And unfortunately, the spiral doesn't have to be as extreme as described above in order to get a guy to not make a move. Instead it could be as simple as "Hmm, I'd like to talk to her, but I heard online that some women find it annoying... I don't want to be annoying, so..." And if the general cultural consensus is that women dislike being approached as a rule, then we would expect guys who are courteous and pro-social to follow the rule, while guys who don't care about those things to break it.
