  • It's systems thinking and if you think it's terrible then because it's terribly good at getting rid of excuses. "Oh but you see the intent of the prison system is to reduce crime, never mind it doing the opposite, move along, nothing to see because intent is all that matters".

  • Me. I said war crimes. Collective punishment is a war crime. You cannot hold people to account on the basis of group membership.

If you want to make a sensible statement, try "You should be ashamed if you don't distance yourself from misogynists". In that case you say someone should be ashamed for their own actions (or inaction), not for something some amorphous group did. Also changing the general "men" to "your peers" is peak goalpost moving.

  • Men should be ashamed that women typically seem to want to pick a bear over themselves

Shame is an individual thing. Men, plural, is a whole bunch of people. Why should I be ashamed for the actions of people that aren't me?

...and just to be clear here: I'm not even arguing that we shouldn't battle this one out between the genders. But collective punishment is against the Geneva convention and I really don't like to stay quiet when people commit war crimes.

  • Nono you're not allowed to judge the man individually. You're required to judge before you see both the man and bear so that we get a properly over-essentialised judgement how else are we going to propagate in- / out-group divisions.

  • But nobody is purposefully “wedging a stick” between allies and enemies.

The purpose of a system is what it does.

  • You are free to set up such a project, instituting yourself as the initial dictator, accepting merit challenges of some specified form, and see whether someone bothers to go for your jugular. Call it KingOfTheHillOS.

...in all seriousness the general issue with merit-based approaches is that you need a way to decide on what "merit" means, and to have an actual project and not a one person show you need a community that shares that definition, and you can't dispose of the dictator if they have the power to dictate what merit is, so you are left with either a) an unchanging definition which is just as bad as unpatchable software or b) some form of stakeholder democracy.

  • No it's perfectly simple: Hamas, Kahanites and the like are fascists and ruin it, on both sides, for everyone, with their warmongering.

The only real mistake you can make in this conflict is see it as "Muslims vs. Jews" or "Palestinians vs. Israelis": It's decent people all over against assclowns and even entertaining those two "vs." there is playing right into their hands.

Side note: Did you know the victims of the Hamas attack were largely Smolanim? Hippie Kibbutz kind of people, travelling into Gaza doing good work, just like those next to the West Bank travel into it to help Palestinians with olive harvests to make it less likely they get shot at by Settlers. Netanjahu and his Kahanites couldn't give less of a fuck about them, which you also see reflected in them ignoring their families, they're like the #1 critics of the government right now.
