  • Time for a new era?

  • I dunno where this is, but these prices seem only slightly elevated above normal to me.

  • I always just thought it was the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon at work… but who knows, I could be wrong.

  • What a role model

  • I’m just jealous we can’t bring in those sexy cars from BYD…

  • I just filled up last night and it was closer to $6 per gallon, with a few places (known tourist trap spots) going up to almost $7. These are the highest I remember seeing in my lifetime, so it’s definitely leaving a lasting impression

As an aside, this was the year I was supposed to go solar and get an EV… but Trump killing the Biden credits, my timelines may have to be pushed back. But with energy prices skyrocketing due to war (or threatening to due to AI data center buildout) it feels like a more urgent need than ever

  • Yep. Good analysis. Probably why I haven’t been able to get along with much of the Kurtzman era Trek. I’ve started Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks and find those two to be actually watchable, but Discovery and Picard I noped out of pretty hard after around a season each, and have no desire to even start Academy.

  • ok then

    Jump
  • I’ll stick to my 30-40 olives, thanks.

  • Isn’t that what the secret service is for?

  • I’ve made homemade sushi before… it’s actually really tasty and not too difficult. Hardest part is getting the rice right.

  • Steak. It’s surprisingly low effort to get a really tasty one, just gotta know the process.

Salt and throw in a low temp oven with a temp probe alarm, then go and have fun. When it hits temp, pan sear for 60 per side and you got something tasty with like 3 min working time.

  • My mom just never made em good. Cook em up right (don’t overcook so they go all sulfury) and add some good seasoning (and onions), and you’ve got something really tasty!

  • HDR, or Dolby Vision? From my research, anything less than the Panasonic UB820 either has missing features, or longevity issues.

Even still, 180 euro is well above the under $40 you can lots of DVD and even Standard Blu Ray

Personally, I grabbed a MakeMKV compatible UHD optical drive from eBay for $150, and just remux my discs to Plex… and then use CoreELEC on the Ugoos AM6B+ to ensure proper Dolby Vision and Lossless Audio support…. but I know that’s not exactly a mainstream option.

  • Amazon has 3 for $33 sales a couple times a year. I just got Wicked (2024), F1 and Sinners in 4k for $11 each.

  • When 4K players cost $500 to get something considered “good but not great”… yeah no wonder no ones buying

  • Early 2000s to mid 2010s movies shot digitally? Sure. Film shot movies, especially on 35mm or larger, absolutely look better in 4k. Especially when they’ve been restored from the negative and converted to HDR for a 4k release.

There’s a lot of older movies out there where the UHD Blu Ray is the definitive version to own, looking significantly better than any prior version (and will likely never look better).

  • 2x? Try 4x+ for fast DDR5

  • I thought Mint was the familiar and accessible entry point for users leaving Windows… guess I’m out of the loop these days
