  • Building defense force isn't just "I'm gonna spend all of this money on guns." Defense is figuring out what the critical industries and supply chains for the good functioning of your economy and your defense ambitions are. Then ensuring those are under your control, ideally domestically. Only then you can build your actual defense force without external actors halting it at will. And here Takaichi falls flat as so many others who think in terms of spending numbers.

  • I was in the same boat until recently. Got a Proton account. There's trivial import setup that both grabs all your email from Gmail, and it sets up forwarding.

    Then you gotta start changing your email in different services to the new one. Should probably register domain for your new email so that you don't have to do this exercise again if you switch out of Proton.

    Install Proton's mail bridge and Thunderbird to backup all your mail. Has better search too.

  • This is geat news. The last time Iran got economic reprieve their economy grew by 6-7% per year and purchasing power grew.

  • Which is a good example for why individualizing regulation does not work when it goes against the tangible material incentives of individuals. E.g. it's cheap and I need a phone charger.

    This and a lot more has to be regulated on national basis and not let through the border when not compliant. We have clothing with heavy metals coming in (Canada). No one tests it, no spot checks, nothing. When I ask people about this they are shocked Health Canada or CBSA do not protect them. I get "But how can it be for sale if it's dangerous?"
