  • You might be right. I'm looking at that as a more general issue of what "no politics" implies. E.g. can we use that to predict how the people working on it would handle the project affiliation in the future. That is, for example are they willing to let it be taken over by a large tech corporation? They're already using the weakest of licences - BSD. The whole point of us supporting another browsing engine by contributing to it, developing for it, or using it is so that we escape the browser-under-ad-company problem. If make Ladybird the next Chromium competitor and the team gets jobs at say Microsoft, then we'd end up back to square one.

    Remember, technology is political and our major technology-related problems are political, not technological. We wouldn't be building alternative browsing engines if Chromium was a community-built project, unaffiliated with an ad company.

  • Haha no, they didn't purge shit. I'm referring for example to the Russian Communist Party of the USSR killing people. And I'm not attaching a moral value on the methods, just looking at it as objective removal of fascist people and then observing modern day Russia. I think there are other similar examples. I imagine Hungary also purged any fascist they could smell ubder the commie rule, haven't checked, and yet here we are today.

  • Even if they were to use a single cloud for the managed instances, this is not at all like the centralization of platform ownership. Here's the critical difference.

    If something happens to Twitter, say a methhead buys it and turns it into a propaganda machine, its users can only stop using it and/or move elsewhere. For this to have a significant effect, the a large part of the network of people has to move. Every individual has to do non-trivial amount of labour to do so. That's hard.

    If something happens to the cloud provider hosting some sizeable Mastodon server, the owner of the server can migrate (copy) the instance to another cloud provider, or their own hardware, switch the DNS records and shutdown the old one. Their users would only notice a brief interruptin. There's no significant labour needed by the users, apart from perhaps logging in again. Only a much smaller amount of labour by the instance owner, compared to the labour needed for mass user migration performed by individual users.

    And that's the major difference that fundamentally changes the dynamics.

  • Well instead of dealing with their fascist problem after WWII, they decided to repress (and sometimes kill) the most reliable antifascists - the leftists.

    That said some countries that objectively did purge their fasists seem to still have that problem today. Perhaps the theory that capitalism creates fascism as it declines predicts this.
