  • Ahem. Moving the goal posts will not get you anywhere with me. Your behavior is the topic here. Stay on topic or expect me to keep repeating it.

  • That's adorable but naive. That's not how communities work.

Do you tell the people in your house that since they don't contribute they aren't worthwhile?

Also, you can stop trying to shift this to being about what other people contribute. What you contribute and how others view it is the subject. Moving the goal post because you are under fire is not acceptable.

  • Certainly a possibility. Lots of people really dislike Gizmodo as a news outlet for past controversy.

  • Your assumption seems to be that the only contribution you can make to a community you are a part of is to be a content poster. This simply isn't true. There's value in the conversations and interactions people have with the content and not everyone contributes the same way.

This assumption you are making clearly leads your other assumptions about value vs detrimental effects and you are obtuse about what you mean when you say things like :

    No, that's not true.

What's not true? That you have a detrimental effect or that I don't care? How do you make that determination? What information and data are you using to quantify it?

I'm especially curious because as far as I can tell what ever "isn't true" is just your opinion and it's a singular one vs the opinions of several people which is where I'm quantifying my own data.

You can say you do care but actions speak louder than words.

If your only solution is to demand the action of others without examining your own actions when those actions are called out then we are having two different arguments here and you should stick to one topic at a time.

"Hundreds of people dislike or find fault with my actions so they should block me" is a statement that doesn't actually have any thought behind it.

  • It's not a block button. It's a mute button. It means that the user who is muted can still see and interact with the posts and comments of the user who muted them. But the user who muted them can't see or interact with the user they muted.

A block would work the way it does on places like Tumblr where regardless of who blocks who the accounts can no longer interact or see each other.

This is problematic specifically because I don't trust you (or most people) to no abuse this work around. I don't trust you specifically because you could have been blocking people who don't like the content you post this whole time and yet here you are.

I also feel like given your reaction to things when proof has been provided that you don't argue in good faith. That's based on reading your comments just in this thread.

I don't care if they ban you or don't. I do care that the comics you post are having a detrimental effect on the community and you don't seem to care about that. If you're not here to build the community then I question your motives.

  • I don't think them saying this has much to do with liking Altman. Rather, I think they are raging at Gizmodo (because well, Gizmodo) and also at the headline of an article they didn't read.

  • Win a car that may be will be spying on you (don't worry, no one will ever win the million dollars).

  • I'm in full support of this.

  • You should probably look up the arrest records of civil rights activists and give a good hard think about whether or not you're willing to be the problem in order to enact a solution because we will not prevail on this in the long run without taking some blows.

This countries government has already proven time and again that they will literally kill people who have done nothing wrong in order to get what they want.

  • People really do believe that they can fight fascism by just avoiding anything that might get them in trouble.

So I'm going to point out that people have already been harassed, arrested, injured, and killed by law enforcement for protesting in other ways too in this country and historically that has also happened.

A demonstration of why a law being enacted (that uses freely /publicly available information) should not be considered a form of harassment.

Further, if it is then it can be argued in a court of law that if it counts as harassment then the law shouldn't enable it to be more effective which is the point.

Calling, emailing, and writing to elected officials isn't harassment, and explaining the very real dangers of the lack of privacy laws and the results of the lack also isn't by itself harassment. But if you will avoid a protest because you feel there may be reprisals against you for it then you're very unlikely to be protesting in the first place. They have already won in this scenario.

  • I don't think you understand what I'm suggesting.

Sending someone a "This is publically available information readily available on the internet that can and will be abused by people once this bill goes through in conjunction with the type of data that will be leaked from said data collection for ID efforts and it's already dangerous now" isn't the same as sending federal judges anonymous pizza. One is a well understood threat, the other is a demonstration from a constituent reaching out to an elected official.

I'm not saying anonymously threaten them.

  • Start looking up freely available information about them on the internet and sending that to them. At some point they will start to recognize that privacy is important.

  • Came here to make sure this was here. Thank you. Carry on.

  • Are the lower prices in the room with us right now?

  • And did the stores lower their prices?

  • I didn't mean it as you specifically. Just in general. My family has a history of sexual abuse because of my grandfather so it was a pretty pertinent example from my own life experience.

I'm sorry if that seemed insensitive.

  • I can agree with that up to a point.

But that's about the psychology of human nature, how it forms memories and attached feelings to them as much as anything else.

That's pretty much why people feel like they are personally being attacked when you ask them to avoid something that is now seen as problematic. Lots of authors (even childrens book authors) dumb down themes and use tropes that are well known on media to make broad strokes for their audience who don't at that time understand nuance.

That's a lot of the "controversy" that comes up around books like the red wall series. Some people think the books are sexist, classist, and possibly racist and I can see their points. At the same time there's an argument to be made for dumbing down certain themes, removing nuance from them so that they are more palatable to a younger audience.

Either way that's not really what you mean. I am not trying to take away from what you said. There are plenty of fans who have been critical of Harry Potter as a media franchise for various reasons including sexism, classism, racism and the allegories associated with each as they come up in the story. Accusing HP fans of not being able to do that is a bit disingenuous because they have been taking these books and movies apart to the bedrock for quite some time now.

What I think you mean is that you want them to be critical of why they enjoy the series so that they can do some introspection in order to part with it, but I'm not sure you understand exactly what you're asking for. There are people who owe their sanity (something they almost lost to the lowest points in their lives) to HP and books like it. The escapism is important for a lot of children who are in dark places.

If the person in that comic had used HP to get them through childhood rape or other abuse, wouldn't that make a lot of sense as to why they react that way to other people who don't know them or their trauma trying to take that away from them?

No this is not me saying that because they have trauma they are allowed to inflict trauma on others.

I look at it this way. The way we inform people and talk to people matters. Treating people like our adversaries makes them defensive and less likely to do what we are asking.
