    ...He clearly doesn't understand what "progressive" and "regressive" taxation means. To break it down Barney-style, if you're poor and make $1000/month, and I'm better off and make $10,000/month with a flat tax of 10%, then you end up with $900, and I end up with $9000. With $900 you might be able to get food and gas for a month. With $9000, I can pay a mortgage, save a bit, and get gas and groceries. This isn't even taking into account that most of the obscenely wealthy take a tiny income and rather live off of investments, which are taxed differently and lower.

    tl;dr: Whoever wrote this is clearly too stupid to be taken as a serious person.

    Second most of the responsibility, actually (actual Trump voters take the most responsibility). They screwed up, and now we're all paying the price.

    But now we have bigger fish to fry. There’s a constitutional crisis on, and a united front is needed against the right.

    Also true. If Trump voters and non-voters realize that they screwed up badly and want to work to fix it, then we need to accept their apology, forgive them, and let them stand with the rest of civilized humanity in countering Trump, Must, and their goons.

  • Just based on my initial understanding of the situation, it looks like pilot error on the part of the helicopter. So, Trump's not wrong; he's just an asshole, and him injecting himself into this is counterproductive. Conspiracy theories relating to this is just...stupid.

  • That's actually an interesting point, and it dovetails with something else I read recently. The right has correctly diagnosed much of our society's ills, but many are too ignorant or indoctrinated to identify the correct solution. Instead, many have fallen in league with the fascists because they've been duped. (That's not to say that many on the right are just simply fascists and bad people because too many are.)

  • No. The United States does not have a king, emperor, or any other kind of monarch. As the Republicans are fond of saying: We are a republic. As a republic--specifically a democratic republic--no one person is above the law. No one in this country is so mighty, so powerful that he can usurp the rights of another or perform actions that would land another in prison.

    We have not lived up to the promise of our republic. Those who seek to benefit from that flaw and those who look to exacerbate that flaw are enemies of liberty and should be treated as such.

  • It's not the most practical thing in the universe, but I have a small VPS that I host my email on for myself and a couple others (5 addresses in total). It's a bit of a pain to set up, but once it's working, it is really nice to have that kind of control.
