  • There's a screenshot I've seen a few times over the years, of part of a Tumblr or reddit thread. I've spent the past half hour looking for it, with no joy, so I probably have some details wrong.

The first part, someone comments about someone who got injured and broke the part of his brain that controlled yawning so he just kept yawning for years. And then someone comes in and says something like, "Wait, what - you're telling me that the default is YAWNING = YES and we have a specific mechanism that says 'No, don't yawn this moment' and it does that constantly?!" And ... then there's a third part where they talk about sharks or something? Like I said, I can't find it right now :(

  • Everyone has different values, different pieces of information (and different amounts of time to do research), and different resources.

No, I don't judge people for not boycotting something I'm boycotting, though I'll mention it if it's going to cause a problem. For example, a friend is a massive fan of seeing things in theaters, including re-releases. If they want to see a re-release of Harry Potter, I'll decline, saying that I'm boycotting Rowling, and offer an alternative.

However, if they've been saying that they're really for/against something and seem to be going to buy something from a company that opposes that view, I'll mention, "Hey, I don't know if you know, but they support XYZ." If they still have to get it, then it's none of my business: everyone has different needs and different resources.

  • I agree with this. I would also add that sometimes time / convenience is a factor. I've a friend who orders from Amazon because she's disabled; I've another friend who has three kids and she's doing her online shopping for back-to-school late at night because that's literally the only free time she has to do it and all the stores are closed.

  • Is it infrastructure week yet? Can't do anything until infrastructure week!

  • Do you have something to back up the MAGA claim? The things I know about him are that he was a Philly firefighter for 20 years, then was assigned to FEMA's Urban Search and Rescue Team, served there for ten years, and became it's head last year (before Trump). I haven't seen anything about his politics.

  • They've already scrapped mandatory water breaks for outside workers :(

  • The House is working on wording to call for the release of all "credible" Epstein allegations. Of course, then they'll get to decide exactly which allegations are "credible" ...

  • You know who never had to "take responsibility for cleaning up the public relations mess" created by their crime boss raping little kids? The press secretary for every other President in US history!

  • “It’s broken and deviated from its original purpose, which is to temporarily help Americans in need,” Turner said. “HUD assistance is not supposed to be permanent.”

If you fuckers had kept the minimum wage in line with inflation, we wouldn't have so many people on long-term assistance. Instead, you keep the minimum wage the same as it was 40(?) years ago, allow massive corporations to onboard people with the explicit instruction, "We're not going to pay you enough, here's how to apply for food stamps and other benefits", then act surprised when people have to use public benefits to survive.

  • ICE 'morale in crapper' as agents forced to 'arrest gardeners'

Like, no one's forcing them to do anything. They could refuse orders, get a transfer, get another job, etc.

  • This was after he stole the trophy itself ....

  • What happens if Paxton wins the primary against Cornyn? Texas becomes a COMPETATIVE STATE for the 2026 midterms.

I don't understand why Texas would become competitive.

  • Separate questions have emerged about the preparedness of local communities, including Kerr County’s apparent lack of a local flood warning system. The county, roughly 50 miles northwest of San Antonio, is where many of the deaths occurred. In an interview, Rob Kelly, the Kerr County judge and its most senior elected official, said the county did not have a warning system because such systems are expensive, and local residents are resistant to new spending. “Taxpayers won’t pay for it,” Mr. Kelly said.

Sounds like they should be blaming themselves, then.

what makes flash floods so hazardous is their ability to strike quickly, with limited warning. Around midnight on Thursday, the [weather offices for the areas that flooded] put out their first flash flood warnings, urging people to “move immediately to higher ground.” The office sent out additional flash flood warnings through the night, expanding the area of danger. It is not clear what steps local officials took to act on those warnings. [...] the local Weather Service offices appeared to have sent out the correct warnings. He said the challenge was getting people to receive those warnings, and then take action.

Again, that sounds like a local issue. What happened to your pride in local government and not needing the feds?

He said that climate change was making extreme rainfall events more frequent and severe, and that more research was needed so that the Weather Service could better forecast those events.

  • Don't get an in-door ice maker. If you have to have an ice maker, have it internal to the unit.

Check out what maintenance you need to do before you buy it, and how easy the maintenance will be given the space you're putting the unit into. Like, if it's a tight fit and surrounded on three sides, cleaning the coils might be problematic, etc.

  • Remember all those videos of police screaming "Stop Resisting" at people who very clearly weren't resisting? Congratulations, you're now a violent criminal.

  • Little blip at 1701 (NCC-1701). I wonder what the other individual blips represent.

  • And suddenly, everything the Russian banks do is related to civil nuclear energy ....

  • I would love AOC as president. Unfortunately, she's a woman and she's a minority, and this country is just too racist and sexist - and stupid! - to elect her.
