  • Twofold thoughts on this. First, it's the same thing they do everywhere: if they can't get the big win, they start chipping away at the edges, the fringe cases that let them establish precedents they can use later.

    And secondly, it's a defensive move, to further differentiate the territories from the states, so that future efforts to give statehood to these areas will fail. In a really cynical viewpoint, it establishes subservient status for territories, including future "acquisitions" like they keep referring to

  • Copying my comment from the other thread:

    1. This is from a right-wing rag, the Washington Times.
    2. Their full platform has many more items; the Washington Times has chosen one they think will enrage their base and one that they think their base will laugh at. You can read the full platform here.
    3. Since the title focuses partially on Congress, their Congressional reforms are [in order]: Replace the two-party system with a multi-party democracy. Expand the House of Representatives, implement proportional representation and ranked choice voting in all elections, and abolish the Senate.
    4. Since the title also focuses on ICE, their abolish ICE proposals include: End ICE detention and deportations and punish federal agents' brutality. Legalize migration, grant amnesty for all immigrants regardless of status, provide a path to citizenship for all permanent residents, and end visa caps and quotas.
    5. Some of their other goals:

    • Extend full voting rights to all permanent U.S. residents and restore the right to vote for incarcerated people and people with criminal convictions. Establish statehood for Washington D.C. and recognize the right to self-determination for all U.S. territories and colonies. Expand and protect voting rights and end voter suppression.
    • get rid of lobbyists, dark money, and Citizens United, and publicly finance all elections. Abolish the Electoral College. Replace the President and Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress.
    • Establish public ownership of the largest corporations and essential industries to ensure democratic control and accountability to the people. Enact aggressive wealth taxes on the richest individuals and corporations to spend on public goods and infrastructure.

    I don't agree with all of their goals, and I don't see a path to get others accomplished, but I like the fact that they're trying to actually fix the system instead of just trying to get along within it.

    he was not aware of any additional copies of the dataset, but said the recent searches have "highlighted technological difficulties of making a representation that every possible variation of the file has been searched for and located." He added, "ICE will continue to make good faith efforts to delete any copies that may be found in the future."

    Translation: we're still going to keep that data, and use it in our operations, we're just setting up an excuse in case we get caught again.

    the Department of Justice is asking the judge to expand his order to allow ICE to receive data on a broader category of noncitizens.

    Evan after repeatedly proving that you can't trust us with data, we want you to force people to give us more data!

  • I remember reading an article years ago, where a young couple had moved into a newly built community. As they settled in, they realized they had projects around the house that weren't overly skilled but would benefit from additional hands. They got together with several of their neighbors who had similar issues.

    Once a month, they descended on one house. The owner had a list of projects - empty the attic, clean out the shed, paint the living room, whatever they needed help with. Everyone would divvy up the work; the owner provided food and drink throughout the day, and at the end, everyone relaxed together. Then the next month, they'd descend on the next person's house.

    The group ended up really bonding together. As they grew older, they helped each other get through illnesses, celebrate graduations and weddings, cope with grief, and stay in their houses. I'm sure it helped that it was a new neighborhood with a bunch of people likely seeking connections, but I'd love to see that kind of bond elsewhere.

    There's an interesting article written back when it was revealed that the post office was recording the envelopes of every piece of mail it handles and what kind of data they could extrapolate from it.
