If I go somewhere and they try to add 20% extra to my bill, they're not getting paid anything at all and I'm leaving immediately. I might even put in an order and walk out just to spite them. That would permanently lose me as a customer for sure.
Fortunately I've only encountered it twice so far, both times we walked out and made sure they understood why they lost our business.

If you have to subject yourself to their bullshit: Always get at least 3 quotes from licensed bonded professionals. If they aren't licensed and bonded, tell them to go jump into a wood chipper because it is 100% not worth the risk.
Yep, I've volunteered off and on since I was a kid. I've done everything from volunteering at a museum to search and rescue. Usually it starts through a friend who is already doing it or sometimes meetup.com.
I'd rather have cheese if I'm on a train and don't need carbs for fuel. If I was riding a bike, I might feel differently.
If there's a disparity in your bread/cheese supply, you could stretch it out by only eating one slice of bread at a time, folding it over a whole piece of cheese (also folded).
E-bikes can really make long distances doable without having to take a shower by the time you get there, but not every place has infrastructure that will support that commute in a survivable way.
If you can pull off living close to work, that's huge too, but it's not always an option unfortunately.
