  • She was his selected choice for the position (in the primary). A vote still took place, but it wasn't because she ran an independent campaign and just happened to be paired with him.

    Shitty paper (NYPost) but it has an unencumbered story making it clear that she was his running mate in the primary, not just the general.

    It's possible for the lieutenant governor to be elected in the primary without being the governor's choice, but that's not what happened with Hochul.

    If the scandal broke before the election people could have changed their votes and if they didn't would have paid attention and ranked lower options, but it didn't.

  • Platner endorsed Jackson for governor. At least in the governor's race he was the one who was most closely aligned with his politics.

    Also, Shah likely wouldn't have beaten him. Jackson, the winner, and one other candidate all encouraged their supporters to rank the other candidates in the group before anyone else. Likely to box Shah out. 2nd place in final rankings doesn't mean you'd beat every other candidate who was eliminated.

    As to the ranked choice Senate primary, it wasn't really much of a contest so it's likely people didn't take ranking seriously. There were only 3 real candidates (write-ins aren't serious), one effectively dropped out and the other wasn't ever competitive. By the time of the election Platner was a lock.

  • Cross-party governors don't really mean a state is on the verge of flipping. It's often that they just have an easier message about criticizing and reigning in the once party establishment. Mitt Romney was the governor of Massachusetts and at no point before or after were the Senate races close. In Kentucky no Democrat has cracked 40% in recent elections and Andy Beshear was governor during them.

  • The article says the legislature removed the governor's role in making a replacement, though I've seen someone elsewhere say that their role in the process is in the state constitution so a regular bill curtailing it wouldn't be valid.

  • She explained why she was reticent to come forward. That's not an answer about why not earlier. She had other options and ended up at a very specific political window.

    It could be simple avoidance of an unpleasant task until the last possible moment or it could be in response to the Republican's accusation not taking off or it could be she was intentionally pressured to release when establishment politicians could insert their own choice. But this wasn't the only option and its timing may impact millions of lives.

  • Bernie likes loyalty and has a blind spot for people who support him, so I don't view reciprocal endorsements from him very highly. He also brought Tulsi Gabbard in and she was rotten way before turning to Trump.

    Platner himself endorsed Jackson though, so hopefully they're more aligned in outlooks.

    I really don't know how someone goes from being the most insider of insider politicians to an outsider populist without it being an opportunistic move though.

    I think the really important thing is that if he drops out, Platner decides his replacement. Anything designed by establishment insiders is going to reek of an establishment coup. Even running a new primary is questionable because it takes time for an outsider to establish themselves as a viable option. People reliably just rank names they know when asked out of cycle who should be the next whatever.
