    It's become easier than ever to offload a growing business. The private equity market has really grown over the last few decades. That means that anyone starting aw business now has the opportunity to sell that business and cash out, at any point from initial founding to a billion dollar company.

    Think of the kind of person that would turn down a billion dollars just to maintain control over their company or work of fiction. Enough money to never have to work again and for you and your descendants to live in absolute luxury. Spend the rest of your days doing literally anything you want.

    Think of that. And now think of what kind of person would turn down such an offer and say, "actually, I want even more money and power. I'll keep running the company."

    We've made it so easy to cash out that only the real weirdos keep going.

  • The future is going to be very strange indeed. Humanity is taking up more and more of the world's land surface. More and more of the available habitats are inside human territory. Wildlife can live within human cities and suburbs, but it requires a great deal of adaptation. Imagine a future where hundreds of species are as adapted to living in our cities as pigeons or raccoons are. If we don't blow ourselves up in atomic fire or fall in an ecological collapse, this is a likely future for our species.

    Cities are a habitat. They offer certain opportunities for resources such as food and water. They offer spaces for nesting and reproduction. Cities represent one of the few ecological niches on this planet that hasn't been fully exploited by evolution. And nature abhors a vacuum. Any ecological niche will be filled eventually. They do require extensive adaptation however. Behaviors that are adaptive in the wild are maladaptive in cities.

    If we manage to somehow keep our crazy way of life going, I imagine in a few millennia our cities will be swarming with dozens of semi-domesticated species similar to raccoons and pigeons. And I imagine they will exhibit any number of clever and surprising adaptive behaviors like this coyote here.

    Hell, people may even find ways to harness this wildlife. Maybe instead of hiring people to pick up trash, we could train crows to collect it for us. Maybe you could train crows to gather up trash, take it to a bin, and have the bin dispense a treat for the crow.

    I hope the future will be strange indeed.

  • What he accomplished was to teach otherwise isolated civilizations that unless they put aside their differences and worked together they were vulnerable to devastating attack.

    One point I liked about Alternate History Hub's version of this is that they pointed out that very few people actually knew what happened. Imagine if half the people on Earth today turned to dust in an instant, and imagine this was a world where Marvel had never existed. Most people would interpret that as some sort of act of Divine judgment. A quote I loved from that video was something like, "people will come to many conclusions. Giant purple man with magic space gems is not the explanation they'll go to first...or ever."

    I don't think Thanos taught anyone anything. Billions of species throughout the universe saw half their population turn to dust. Then a few years later, all those people just mysteriously came back. They have no idea what a Thanos is. They've never never heard of the Avengers or the Infinity Stones. It's just this completely inexplicable event outside all known laws of science. It's unambiguous proof that some sort of supernatural forces exist in the universe, but everything beyond that is open to interpretation.

    Centrists are insane. Literally definitionally insane.

    A definition for madness is "trying the same thing repeatedly expecting a different result."

    We nominate corporate centrists election after election, and they lose again and again. Yet somehow these losers always get portrayed as reasonable and electable. Biden only squeaked out a win in 2020 because of covid. Even with a million Americans dead and in the ground, in large part due to Trump's mismanagement, corporate dems were so unpopular that Biden was only able to barely get over the finish line.

    This is the core of it. Some people form their opinions on what electability looks like in one era and then blindly carry that assessment forward for the rest of their lives. In the 90s and 2000s, being centrist was electable. Pre-2008, things were going pretty well in America. We were still riding the post-Cold War high and the long-term effects of neoliberal economics hadn't really come home to roost yet. The social compact was still reasonably intact. Not for all, but for most. If you played along with the system - get an education, work hard, get married, buy a house, avoid drugs and other destructive behaviors - your life was most likely going to be fine. Racism still existed. People still had their lives derailed by medical emergencies. But for enough of the population, things were well enough that "don't rock the boat" was a viable political platform. Some folks still protested of course. But most folks were comfortable enough to simply focus on their own lives.

    We are no longer in that world. "Go along with the system and live a private life" is no longer a reliable path to a life of stability and dignity. It hasn't been that way since the Millennial generation came out of college. And elder millennials are in their early 40s right now. We're reaching a point where the majority of the electorate has had to live their entire adult lives in a condition of economic precarity. Neo-liberalism is toxic because more and more of the electorate has had to grow up under its effects.

    This has completely transformed what an "electable candidate" even is.

  • Because progressives do not do the ground work. Not effectively. It’s as if taking people who are social outcasts and asking them to compete in a battle of popularity puts them at a disadvantage.

    I really don't know what you're smoking. Centrists buy TV ads. Progressives focus on ground game. Centrists give their money to corporate consultants, progressives on knocking on doors.

    Look at the recent Michigan Senate primary. Stevens outspent El-Sayed 12 to 1!.

    Progressives can't match the dollars of corporate Democrats; their only hope to win is a massive ground game. It's the only way to win if you're being massively outspent.

    Like, seriously. I am honestly curious how you reached such an insane conclusion. Like, if progressives are known for anything, it's rejecting corporate funding in lieu of the ground game. What possibly lead you to such a bone-headed and farcical conclusion?

    It's like trying to argue that Republicans are better at protecting abortion rights than Democrats. It's just pants-on-head silly.
