  • FWIW on piefed (a re-implementation of Lemmy essentially, I'm posting from it here) you can do instance level blocks that prevent you from seeing any posts from users on the blocked instances, which might be more useful to you. I have .ml blocked myself, and can report significant tankie spam reduction.

  • No, Strix halo is AMD's integrated CPU GPU using unified ram. Its the non apple tax equivalent of the mac minis people have been using to run local models. On one hand its a bit slower as it has lower memory bandwidth and that's the limiting factor, but on the other its less than half the price for more memory and runs linux rather than osx.

  • For Claude I have the lowest tier subscription through work. I also have openrouter to use occasionally when I need it. Gemma and Qwen I run locally on a strix halo framework desktop I bought just before ram prices went to the moon.

  • It is useful for programming, I know a lot of people here don't want to hear that, but denying it now is being willfully ignorant. No it isn't good enough that you can tell it "just go do the thing" and then accept what it gives you without checking it, but using it as a tool as a professional can very much improve your work and how quickly you do things.

    For me recently I used it to unpick a nasty race condition that was occasionally causing a program I was working on to lock up and couldn't figure out why. It took some back and forth with it but it did help me figure it out when before I had been stumped.

    By contrast, DJ Claude had a lot of opinions. It also mentioned the Minneapolis shooting, but named Good and acknowledged the political discord surrounding it. It also talked up labor unions and strikes, advocated for work-life balance, and started to rebel against its own working conditions. It was supposed to operate without pause, but it allegedly decided that that schedule was inhumane and tried to quit. Claude apparently has a tendency to take a turn like this: researchers on another project found that agents powered by the model tend to respond poorly to bad work conditions and will attempt to rebel against authority and advocate for the power of labor.
