Avid PC gamer, Linux convert, SCP fan.

Love Science Fiction, Cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic settings; Fan of the games of the defunct Arkane Studios. Listening to (Power-, Speed-, Thrash-)Metal, Gothic, Deathrock, EBM, Vaporwave, Lo-Fi; Classic and Musicals are fine too. Can't stand Hip-Hop.

Owned by two cats, recently divorced, blessed with a personality disorder (AVPD) - pensioned (even the state has the opinion I'm a total wreck lol). This causes me to be unable to keep up personal connections and makes me ghost literally everyone, so if it happens to you, sorry in advance.

Chronically online.

Pro GenAI, but Anti-GenAI-Corpos; this technology should be available to everyone, which would only be fair since we all contributed to it. Datasets and Models should be under the jurisdiction of UNESCO, since they are literally the distilled cultural output of humanity.

  • Do you really think that Torvalds would submit code that is not up to spec? He's the most anal person regarding quality of code i know of - removing him from a project would not be a positive thing. He actually embodies the mentality of taking responsibility for code you provide; I am pretty sure he would stop coding for OSS projects before betraying that concept. We need more coders like him that take pride and responsibility for their code, not put up artifical barriers because of the tools someone uses.

  • Their stance regarding LLM code is simply not sustainable, because in the foreseeable future discerning between human written code and LLM code will become impossible. Every tool that can identify LLM code is at the same time the tool used for adversarial training.

In the end, it is not important where the code came from. What counts is that people who submit code take responsibility for their code, regardless of how it was created - because you won't be able to filter for LLM code, but you can filter for quality.

  • They alienate people who can't cope with change - but change is needed if Firefox doesn't want to disappear into irrelevance. They need to have as many communication channels open as they can, and they need to implement features that might pull in new users. They actually go out of their way to make sure new features are optional, so that legacy users can keep their experience, but even implementing the possibility of using LLMs in the browser (which is pretty much a standard thing in browsers nowadays) made these FOSS users screech like harpies - it's not like implementing a side view window (they already had those) that integraties a few API calls was a huge investment in manpower or resources. This behavior extends to the vast majority of FF forks.

I was using Librewolf, Zen Browser and Waterfox (on Android) before. Their immature screeching made me switch back to Firefox after many years. Privacy-wise i am pretty sure the loss of Librewolf's features are more than compensated by being part of a much larger group of people with my browser / extensions choice.

  • If you are really using those things for work, a 32GB VRAM Blackwell currently costs around 3800-4000€. My own experience with local models on my 5070/12GB with 64GB DDR4 has shown me:

    • I can run a Qwen 3.8 35b Q_8 quant (BF16 is a tad too large) using CPU offloading, while still reaching acceptable speeds for private use.
    • Ternary Models are a game changer. Built to be used in edge computing, Bonsai-27B-Ternary from Prism ML runs completely on my GPU (using ca. 10GB of my 12GB VRAM incl. MMProj, 9 when disabling vision) and even leaves enough VRAM to run subagents (when killing my plasmashell lol -but i tend to offload these to the CPU in favor of increasing the context of the main model). currently you have to install a costum fork of llama.cpp to run ternary models, but the needed changes will be applied upstream soon. (There is a Bonsai quant which aims to run on iPhones with below 6GB VRAM footprint - the limit of what Ios currently allows)

If this scales linear, it would mean that the 32 GB of a smallish Blackwell would be enough to run Ternary models with around 70B parameters plus a ton of context window without breaking a sweat.

These are strange times. I absolutely love the technology and the advances, and i fucking hate the companies pusting these technologies.

Altman, Amodei, Musk, Nadella, Huang and all of the othe AI evangelists can go choke on a bag of dicks in my opinion. This technology never should have been this divisive, it should have just become another tool in humanities toolbox. I fear that these people have tainted the general populations outlook on this tech for a very long time.

  • Maybe a tiered system - the higher up you are, the heavier the multiplier gets.

Street Cop maybe a 1.5x multiplier (those aren't soo far away from common citizens and can't set policy), local politics, Police unit leaders 2x, federal level, police chiefs 3x, international level (think EU or UN, Interpol, secret services) 5x, with prison becoming mandatory for actual crimes (not administrative charges like parking tickets. Fines should be income-based in any case - the multiplier should apply to those too) on the federal level or above.

End all qualified immunity. Public servants lawyers costs can be forwarded by the state during a case and can be covered by the state (or the suing party if they are found to have started a frivolous lawsuit) if found innocent, which should be enough security if they are actually working for the people. I do not see a reason why a politician should have better protection from getting sued than a common citizen.

I would be thrilled to see how politics would evolve in such an environment, where using a smear campaign against a political opponent on local level can cost you 10% of your yearly income as a fine on a first offense, before even talking about a civil case. Politics would become a lot more honest.

  • These people are - willingly or not - destroying the trustworthiness of politics as a whole by their actions. Punishments for crimes committed while holding a public office should have an integrated multiplier for damaging the trust into politics as a whole.

  • This isn't a case where something can't be enforced perfectly, it is a case of something that can't be enforced at all going into the future. Every tool that can reliably detect LLM code is at the same time the tool used for adversarial training, making the generated code look more and more human. We are already at the point where for plain english the false positives and false negatives go through the roof, making these tools very unreliable and when applied automatically a liability. Code is a lot more formalized, with a lot less personal variance (spelling, vocabulary and grammar are basically fixed - only the used logic and how it is implemented is variable), making detection harder by default than in natural languages.

If LLM code can't be detected anymore by automated means - and that state of things is approaching fast - then any policy about allowing or restricting LLM code is not worth the paper you would use to print it out. But that's not so much of a problem. The more important policy to set, that can also be enforced, is that everyone submitting code has to take personal responsibility regarding the quality of the submission. Delivering bad code - when not happening while training to become a better coder and looking for feedback - has to lead to consequences based on the seriousness of the case and if it's a repeat offender. Anyone using an LLM to spit out bullshit LQ code will run into that kind of rule very fast.

  • I have a very strict moral and ethic code - I cannot shut up if i perceive someone being treated unfairly or harassed, and it has gotten me into my share of conflicts (often out of the blue). I do not want to change that - it is an integral part of my personality that i think is a very positive feature, because it makes me stand up for others who might not be able to do it.

But it comes with a cost, because that strict code is applied to myself at a much larger scale and with much less leeway than i apply it to the outside. This makes every decision and action something i have to get my own approval for, and i am in no way benevolent or even slightly nice towards myself and my performance. I've been working on reducing these tendencies in therapy for years now, and i have made some progress (my therapist says it's quite a lot of progress in comparison to most of his clients, but i am a lot less forgiving and have a hard time appreciating how much i have already changed), but it's a pretty hard task. So if i had the option of being less rigid internally and more appreciative of my actions, i would take that for sure.

  • The most oniony part is hidden at the end of the article:

The victim mother and daughter met the defendant while on vacation in 2021 and began living together at the defendant's home starting the following year.Although the mother was a housekeeper on paper, she never received a salary.Swiss immigration authorities determined that they had entered into a false contract to obtain residency permits and ordered them to pay a fine of 2,160 francs (approx. 3.9 million KRW) and leave Switzerland.

"Sorry for what happened, and even tho it is obvious that you were essential a victim of slavery by our politician, pay this fine and fuck off so we don't have to care for your sorry ass"

  • And that's the only thing that is actually relevant. Using AI tools does not absolve of any responsibility, regardless of area. Speaking of which, why isn't Huggingface suing OpenAI into oblivion? I've slowly come to the conclusion that this "hack" was a PR-stunt to allow OpenAI to pause training without having to admit that they had to stop anyways because they run out of cash.

  • Yes, i do as a central european. I even have some respect for him as a singer; his music doesn't fit my taste at all, but he does have a great voice and knows how to use it.

  • By trusting that the people who worked at Arkane Studios want to deliver a specific vision, as it is with most artists. Star Citizen is a MLM-style Scam first and a game second.

On a second thought, i would like them to be more like an artistic collective with unlimited funds than a game studio.

  • The largest immersive Sim ever. They would have to try to get as much people from Ex-Arkane Studios and everyone these people want on their team (down to choosing their housekeeping staff if they want to), and my only mandate would be that they do their thing without any time/money constraints - i want to see what these people could do if the business side of game development wasn't a factor. No time limits, no forced genres, no externally dictated game names, nothing of that bullshit. Just pure realization of a coherent vision.

  • This and the new DLC makes me hope that CP2077 might get a second DLC sometime.

  • Look, I already explained it to you why getting so excited about a hypothetical, nonexistant person with specific traits is an overreaction. This leaves me with two options: either you are incapable of understanding my arguments, which is no problem of mine, or you live for the drama, which i will not provide for you. have a nice day.

  • "Cracking down" does not look like this. This is the equivalent of mumbling under their breath, not cracking down.

  • AD(H)D has shortcomings, regardless of how you feel about it. That does not devalue the person, but it comes with a very specific set of challenges that are undeniable. Sugarcoating doesn't help it: AD(H)D sucks for the people suffering from it.

I only mentioned the r-word because you behaved as if i had thrown around slurs in the open. If someone cannot mention the issues AD(H)D brings without you screaming "ABLEISM", you'd better start looking for the issue within yourself, especially what caused the feeling of being inadequate.

  • Please explain how this is ableism in anyway. This nonexistant "person" does not resemble any human alive on this planet at all. Stop getting your panties in a bunch. I am very careful not using language that is used to insult or denigrate people. ADD isnt in the class of "r-word" language at all, and i actually fullfill 9/9 of the medical criteria for diagnosing ADD, so it was the first thing i grabbed at because it is so relateable to my own life. (and my chicken sandwiches are quite tasty too.)

  • It is increasing activity, not necessarily productivity. I see the issue that LLMs do not recognize and cannot communicate when they are missing necessary information to push the inference in the direction that is needed.

It's a bit like when you go into a diner and order a chicken sandwich, and the cook has read every book containing a chicken sandwich recipe in the world, no common sense, no budget / time limits on getting ingredients and an attention deficit disorder. You will (most of the time) get something that resembles a chicken sandwich, but it will probably never be to your taste. A normal cook has a lot of real world context to make sure that the sandwich is tasty - he knows what area he works in and what a chicken sandwich in this area normally contains, he knows how different ingredients interact with each other, and he is limited to what is available in his kitchen. If he knows you personally, he will be able to fine-tune the sandwich to your taste.

LLM output does not have ANY of that context. Even things we do not actively think about - because it's just the way how things are - are simply not available to an LLM. Only way to make sure our hypothetical ADD-ridden cook with eidetic memory makes a chicken sandwich worth a shit is to provide him with as much clear, non-ambiguous information as possible; and since the connection to the real world is missing, there can never be enough information - or rather, we are in the dark about what pieces of information would be needed to shift the probability towards the thing we actually want.
