  • I've had a Debian install brick itself on update / restart. As annoying as Windows is, it hasn't done that to me. Nothing is perfect, there are horrible software crimes hiding under every system you could name.

  • According to Wikipedia, while a market for old, low-background steel was real phenomenon for a few decades, that's pretty much over.

World anthropogenic background radiation ... began to fall in 1963 ... and by 2008 it had decreased to only 0.005 mSv/yr above natural levels.[9] This has made special low-background steel no longer necessary for most radiation-sensitive uses, as new steel now has a low enough radioactive signature.

So you may consider your friend's estate-sale theory in light of that time-line.

    but it carries some weight

    Did you know about !dadjokes@lemmy.world?

  • It should be obvious that [founder's] private donation to a political party is not part of [his company's] values or mission

Riiiiiiiiiight, because it always shakes out like that

  • Okay, fair, the technicalities are part of the justice system.

What I mean is, there will be no opportunity to refute the charges, to recognize, in an official way, that the charges were baseless and corrupt. There will not be even the slimmest possibility that the people who caused him to be charged will face any consequence for their corruption.

  • If this strategy works, it will mean that Hearn escapes his bullshit charges through legal technicalities rather than through anything that looks like a functional justice system.

  • The whole point of corruption is that powerful agents are no longer bound by rules in any way that matters.

Sure, "ban" those models. The way insider trading is banned. The way sex with minors is banned. The way felons in office are banned. The way taking state secrets home with you is banned.

That's not going to work, because we broke it on purpose.

  • What is the Venn diagram of "People who can't stop arguing in online forums" and "People who have become addicted to obsequious, flattering LLM chats?"

Is there any overlap? Is it perfect overlap? Is it some boring in-between answer?

  • If the cops in your part of the world are like the ones in mine, its a sure bet they clock way, way more shooting range time than you and your friends do.

  • I can smell the Freedom burning all the way over here

  • Solar panels and infrared heat disposal into space can both work just fine right here on the ground.

  • Ooh, I've seen this one. The secret is just to build them out of paperclips.

  • Instead of interviewing a rich, famous, busy person, wouldn't it be easier to ask an AI to pretend to be that person, and interview the AI?

Or even to ask the AI to just write both parts of the interview itself? Wouldn't that just be helping interviewers get the stories they want to share out into the world?

  • I'm not going to presume to tell you what she really thinks or really stands for, but my understanding was the whole "this job sucks" thing was a refusal to defend what ICE was doing. That she had been given the thankless task of being the legal point of contact between a justice system she had worked very hard to become a part of and a rogue agency that was making a mockery of justice in every sense.

  • I can't help but feel that the sort of person who would be likely to try and harm a member of the Supreme Court is busy at home, furiously masturbating over the Court's recent decisions.

"Racial profiling, so hot... Oh God, oh God is that the Shadow Docket? Yes, yes!"

  • The C-suite people got rich by (to be a little reductionist about it) telling other people what to do, and they can't imagine that everyone else wouldn't leap at the chance to do the same.

  • The trouble is, the source of the brain worm story was ... him. So if you believe it, you're taking a brain-worm-victim's word on his condition.

  • Star drive and Torx are so much better I can't believe they haven't taken over the whole world
